Spain is passionate, sophisticated and devoted to living the good life. The passions of Spain’s people are the fabric of daily life – this is a country with music in its soul and where food and wine is a national obsession!!!
Spain is a country that lives very much in the present and ‘fiesta’ is one of the best-known words in the Spanish language. It’s because life is itself a fiesta here and everyone seems to be invited. Perhaps you’ll sense it at night when all of Spain comes out to play. Or maybe that moment will come when a flamenco performer touches something deep in your soul. Whenever it happens, you’ll find yourself recognising that, THIS IS SPAIN
The tour includes:
Thursday 18 May - 21 May - BARCELONA
We land in Barcelona, and meet at the airport for our transfer to our hotel.
Barcelona, Spain’s most innovative seaside city, offers a staggering array of attractions.
The city was reborn with the Olympics in 1992 and stresses the importance of Catalan history and culture. Take in the Passeig de Gracia, the most stylish street of Barcelona, lined with boutique shops and art galleries. Also La Rambla, with its outdoor cafes, flower stands, exotic birds and equally colorful street performers.
Just off La Rambla are the antique stalls at La Boqueria, Barcelona’s outdoor market considered to be one of the best markets in the world. Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter rests on the ancient Roman city of Barcino, today full of buildings from the 13th to the 15th century. Then of course Sagrada Familia, Gaudí's most famous work and a worldwide symbol for Barcelona.
Join me as we relish strolling the cobblestone lanes of the Gothic quarter, thinking about all the people in past centuries who walked these same streets.
The city streets are an extension of the lives of its inhabitants; they are part of their homes, their way of sharing and living together in what is, in short, their home or everyone's home. If we walk through Barcelona, we'll see that every street has its own unique story to tell. If you ask any Barcelona local to name the best Catalan invention of all time, nine out of ten will probably reply "el pa amb tomàquet!" (bread rubbed with tomato). More than a simple recipe, culinary technique or custom, the gesture of rubbing tomato on a piece of bread is a sign of Catalan identity. Just wait until you taste it!!!
We will tour the city taking in all the history, culture, food and a cooking lesson – and of course free time to explore or shop on your own.
Sunday 21 May to Thursday 25 May - Seville, Andalucia
Today we fly from Barcelona to sultry Seville in Andalucia.
The scent of orange blossom, the thrash of a flamenco guitar, the glimpse of a white village perched spectacularly atop a crag, memories of Andalucía stay with you like collected souvenirs. An amazing Tapas tour is planned with a local resident for our first night in Seville. Seville is possibly the best city in Spain for tapas. It is after all, the home of the tapas and has the largest number of bars per inhabitant anywhere, offering an amazing range of food. There’s something for everybody, whether it be meat, seafood, vegetables, olives, cheese etc. You name it, somebody is sure to have used it in a tapa. In charming small bars in the heart of Sevilla’s historic area, sample hearty food in manageable portions, helped down with some pleasingly potent wines, and amidst the joyous hullabaloo of the welcoming Sevillanos. The variety is extensive, encompassing seafood, salads, cured hams, cheeses, red pepper dishes, the obligatory Spanish potato omelette and so on. Tapear’ in Sevilla is a fun and recommendable alternative to the full-blown sit down meal.
This is the area of the famous Iberian pig and we will taste the most amazing “jamons” washed down with fine wine.
We will witness the authentic passion of Flamenco at an authentic venue. With roots tracing from Andalusian, Islamic, Sephardic and Gypsy origins, flamenco is a combination of intricate guitar playing, powerful singing ranging from the exuberant to the sorrowful, and passionate yet graceful dancing. A visit to Spain without a flamenco experience is not complete...
A half day tour of the city will finish with an informal lunch in a local eatery.
We have a cooking lesson planned with one of Seville’s most prestigious chefs who will share some local secrets with us - and of course free time to explore or shop on your own!!
Thursday 25 May to Saturday 27 May - Ronda, Malaga region
Today we make our way to ancient Ronda. Ronda is Málaga province’s most spectacular town. It has a superbly dramatic location, and owes its name (‘surrounded’ by mountains), to the encircling Serranía de Ronda.
The beautiful town has a colourful and romantic past in Spanish folklore. Ronda was a favourite with the Romantics of the late 19th century, and has attracted an array of international artists and writers, such as Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles.
We will enjoy a walking tour of the town, wine tasting, olive oil tasting and of course free time on your own. I have heard many people tell me that this is their favourite town in the whole of Spain!!
On Saturday the 27 May we make our way to Malaga airport, where we will catch our connections home.
