On the R511 near Magaliesberg, S 25°47.877’ E 27°58.497’, Johannesburg
This is a 11km+ hike and one of the most popular in Gauteng.
Google maps gives the coordinates as [masked],[masked]
(S 25° 47' 54.2''; E 27° 59' 8.0'').
We have two groups at our Hennops Hike: ‘Fast’ and ‘Intermediate’.
William Nicol Dr becomes the R511. Continue along the R511 and turn left into Hartbeespoort . Even though you turned left you are still on the R511 (had you continued straight on you would end up on the M26). Once you cross the Hennops Bridge the road goes uphill. At the top of the hill you will see a sign on the right indicating 'Mangwanini Spa'. Turn left into a gravel road - you are now driving on a gravel road and the road splits. Take the right gravel road to 'DAY HIKERS & HADEDA CAMP' - as you drive on along this gravel road towards the HADEDA CAMP you will end up at the parking area which is also the starting point of the Hike.
There are different hikes including the 12.8 Km (the most popular); shouldn’t you feel fit enough you can always hike along the river (not alone please) and then return to the picnic area and wait for the rest of the group.
3 - 4 hours.
There are various bridges crossing the Hennops River. Once the 11.5 km hike has been completed we have a choice:
We can cross the river on the cable chair (no safety cable at all… but this is the crossing people enjoy the most…).
Or you can walk downstream and cross the concrete bridge which is used by 4x4 vehicles… terra firme and very safe. This crossing is not available when the river is in flood.
Can you offer someone a lift? Would you like a lift? Please let everyone know what your situation is. Should you be driving with someone please share costs. - this is more sociable and much cheaper than driving there on your own.
What to bring:
Essentials include: a hat (it can get hot!), sun cream and PLENTY WATER. To wear? workout takkies, running shoes or hiking boots. Bring a snack or two...
Adult: R90 (R60 + R30 event fee).
Under 12's: R40 (R30 + R10 event fee)
Please bring along the correct amount. We do not always have change and there is no ATM machine nearby nor debit/credit card machine facilities.
Bring something to share with people you are driving with. Some leave straight after the hike, some will stay and enjoy a picnic or a braai depending on your time schedule.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a beautiful hike and great exercise. It is tough at stages and once you are into the hike there is no returning (unlike Klipriviersberg where you can exit at different points). If you are reasonably fit and can maintain a good pace pls join us and you will certainly enjoy a great outing. Should you feel more comfortable with a slower, relaxed pace you are welcome to stroll down the river and meet the rest of the group in the swimming pool area on our return.
