Old Town Alexandria's KING STREET ART FESTIVAL! Art, Ice Cream, Dining, Spirits!

Alexandria Visitor Center (Ramsay House)

Explore Old Town Alexandria’s vibrant scene that overflows with delicious restaurants, eclectic boutiques, and dynamic art venues. To add to this, this year there are THREE events happening in Old Town Alexandria this week: The King Street Art Festival The Art League’s Ice Cream Fundraiser Event The Beer & Wine Torpedo Garden at the Torpedo Factory We will mainly be focusing on the Art Festival, but we'll see if we can squeeze in the Torpedo Factory to explore the other two events as well. (We *might* do the ice cream first, just so that we have first pick of the best bowls to take home.) ABOUT THE KING STREET ART FESTIVAL: The 17th Annual King Street Art Festival will line King Street on Sept. 21 and 22, bringing together local and world-famous artists in one of Alexandria's signature events. Alexandria has become well known for its thriving arts and culture scene, and the King Street Art Festival adds to this every year. With blocks of beautiful paintings, life-size sculptures, jewelry, photography, ceramics and more, the festival transforms Alexandria’s famous King Street into an outdoor art gallery. The Festival will have booths featuring original fine artwork by more than 200 artists from the Alexandria, across the United States and abroad. Food will also be available, and many local stores offer specials. The Art League's ice cream bowl fundraiser returns this year. Attendees can take away fabulous handmade bowls created by the talented artists of The Art League’s Ceramics Department and enjoy a scoop of ice cream for just $15. All proceeds support The Art League’s Ceramics Program. If ice cream isn’t enough, the 2nd annual Beer & Wine Torpedo Garden will also be taking place at the Torpedo factory. They claim, “A trip to the King Street Art Festival isn’t complete without a visit to the Art Center. Enjoy a glass of craft beer or wine while exploring all three floors of artists’ studios. Meet the artists and find original art created on-site. Recharge and refresh with exhibitions, games, and music. Enjoy selections from Port City Brewing, Lost Boy Cider, and Sonoma Cellar.” The festival offers something for everybody, from live music to interactive activities and the opportunity to meet amazing artists. (Excerpt from Alexandria Living Magazine.) WHAT TO KNOW: The main event, the King Street Art Festival, is free and is metro accessible. It is scheduled for a generous 7 hours with a break in between to eat. However, feel free to leave as your schedule necessitates. WHAT THE TRUE COST COULD BE: Even though the main event is free, note the optional Ice Cream Bowl Fundraiser costs $15, the optional Beer & Wine Torpedo Garden will have varying prices, as will any restaurants, and you may need to pay for parking if you are unable to find a free spot. CARPOOL: If you would like to carpool, contact me through the comment section below or private message me through the Meetup.com email to see if we can coordinate a carpool. Note you will need to contact me at least 24-48 hours in advance. Contact me sooner, rather than later since I have a small car and am limited on space. (I can only take in 3-4 more people.) Also, we would be meeting extra early--as much as two hours earlier--to accomodate the logistics. If you wish to carpool, BRING CASH to help contribute to the parking fee. WHAT TO BRING: Bring cash if you intend to carpool. If you’re on a budget, bring a bagged lunch. Don’t worry! We know what it’s like to be in a money crunch and I might just join you. Otherwise, some of us may elect to buy lunch from vendors or go to a restaurant. WHAT TO WEAR: Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Check the weather and dress accordingly. If you remain unsure, dress in light layers. Also, bring an umbrella in case of sprinkles. WHEN & WHERE TO MEET: Unless you’re carpooling, we will meet at 12:00 NOON at the Alexandria Visitor Center (Ramsay House) at 221 King St, Alexandria, VA[masked]
