*** Come learn to canoe and explore a new beautiful spot in your own region. Enjoy the day or choose to stay overnight for our first camping weekend on the beautiful Gatineau River, Quebec. Photos below are from last year. Spectacular! ***

Meet people learning new essential canoe skills. Canoeing is the best way to get out, get fit, and get social. Discover a new area to paddle too. The adventure alone is worth it. $30 off for those on our coming 3 night Canada Day canoe kayak camping trip in La Verendrye.

(Check out last year's session or the one before to see what the area is like or see our camping trip there.)

It's the best way to connect with outdoorsy singles.  This area has sparkling waters, cascading waterfalls down granite cliffs, swimming spots with cliff diving opportunities, and fantastic scenery. It's also a great place to learn how to perform canoe rescues in a shallow sandy area in a place that feels like it's hundreds of kilometers away.

New paddlers and experienced paddlers are welcome to take this lesson that includes canoe rescues.  A short paddling lesson will be provided then we paddle to a local beach learn how to perform canoe rescues in a shallow area.

To get ready for this, you may also take go on one of our Thursday night paddle series. It's a great warm-up to our 3 night Canada Day canoe kayak camping trip in La Verendrye, a summer classic extraordinaire you don't want to miss! You'll never go back to car camping after this.

Pack a brown bag lunch and bring your swim suit and hiking boots, as we head to Martindale (on the Gatineau River). After our brief lesson, we will continue to explore the islands, waterfalls, and vestiges of the logging era.

Canoeing-Kayaking: We will head out from Pointe-Gatineau (5 minutes from the Byward Market), load our canoes / kayaks and then drive about 45 minutes to our put-in. John provides ropes and foam pads to car-top carry the boats easily.

Pricing: $80 for those who prepay for lesson, canoe, and guiding. $85 for non-online or prepayments. $30 for guiding only if you bring your own boat. Only those who pre-pay will have confirmed reservations and have priority in a limited number of canoes.

The route:

We will put in at the Low Dam and head to John's favorite spots, into an area that reminds him of Algonquin Park.

Duration:

6 hours, depending how much fun we are having.

Weather contingencies:

Should weather be a factor, we reserve the right to reschedule for Sunday, June 16th or a following weekend.

(Please note: Only those who pre-pay are confirmed attendees and have first right to a seat in the canoe. Those who prepay online or otherwise, pay $80. Others who pay at the event pay $85.  Everyone should kick in and help pay the $5 to $10 for gas.  Carpooling available.)

Provisions:

Bring your own snacks / brown bag lunch, beer, wine, and other refreshments, as we'll stop at one of the local islands or beaches to take a break, share food if you like, and socialize.

Gear: Paddles and lifejackets are included, however, you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Things to bring:

- lunch and water / juice

- suntan lotion

- hat

- rain gear

- water shoes

- change of clothes after canoe rescue swimming exercise

- swim suit / towel

- camera

- binoculars

- dry bag to protect your gear (everyone responsible to protect their own electronics and valuables in case of water damage, etc.)

Sorry I haven't logged in, I switched to a new phone and all my apps were lost! Is anyone picking up Carmen? I haven't checked the map yet for where we're going but I could pick her up on the way. I'm coming from West and take the parkway. John could you send me the exact address for where we're initially meeting up? Also, when is it expected we will return to Ottawa? I'm arranging carpooling for something else my kids have on and need to know what time. Thanks.

Ok I will contact Carmen. I didn't realize there was a camping option or I would have arranged for sitters. I can't leave the kids for longer than the day but next time...

Can we keep change of clothes, lunch, valuables etc. in our cars or does everything go in the canoe with us? (I don't think i have a drybag, or not sure where it is)? Thanks.

It looks like a great weekend coming up. Anyone interested in turning this canoe picnic weekend into an overnight camping trip? We would do the lesson on Saturday and stay at the same location overnight where we would practice our rescues and paddling technique. It is suggested that those who don't know how to paddle come to either of our paddling outings this Wednesday or Thursday, to learn the basic strokes first.

Carmen, Can you get a ride to my place? If so, I can give you a ride to where the lesson is. Where are you coming from in the city so people know if they may be passing by you on the way?

To accommodate Carmen, I am offering people the opportunity to take a paddling and rescue lesson on Saturday, June 8th as well. Please feel free to choose either date or come to both for extra practice at no extra cost, if we have extra space in the other class.
