What's so special about swing dancing?
People who say Ottawa culture is boring don't get it. Ottawa is a community of sub-cultures, that you have to infiltrate to make this the most fun place in the world to be. Swing dancing one of the most fun sub-cultures around. Ottawa's weekly dances are great, often with live bands, harken back to the 30s through early 60s, and updated with techno-swing dancing too that is also taking Europe by storm. With various Canadian champions in town, Ottawa-Gatineau has the best swing dance community in Canada that's friendly and inclusive. Why not join us and imagine having the confidence to join other singles at a variety of swing dance outings around town this Fall and Winter?
Your goal is closer than you think, when you join our intensive 3 hour swing dance workshop, followed by 3 refresher classes over the next two weeks (dates to be determined) to learn a full swing dance routine you can use immediately afterwards.
Price is for 6 hours of training over two weeks. ($105 for prepayment online or otherwise, $120 for drop-in).
The program has two elements:
* A 3 hour workshop to kick-start the learning process (good for those who want review as well). We learn a routine we can use or modify on our own later.
* 3 lessons review afterwards over the next two weeks: After you learn the routine, these practice classes within days of your 3 hour workshop will help you to fully absorb and refine your new dance skills.
The Dance Workshop Program:
Our instructor, will teach a social level swing routine, comprised mostly of east coast with a few open elements. The routine can be done as a whole or the participants should be able to utilize individual parts hopefully take away leading and following technique that could be used if they chose to stray from the routine itself.
What makes this workshop special? This workshop was designed based on a successful formula developed by Funabalu founder and adult educator, John Savage. Various moves will be combined into one routine you can use on dance floors around town. Our workship and lessons accelerate the learning process, much faster than any other program around.
We will have periodic breaks in which we can practice and at 1 pm, there will be a special cha-cha and rumba dance presentation by one of Ottawa Dance Sport Studio's top amateur couples - Sam Huang and Taissa Sekret.
From 1 pm to 4 pm we learn, then you have the option to join us for Saturday night swing dancing at the Swing Dynamite Dance Studio to burn our new moves into our brains. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we have our follow-up swing dance lesson and the next Friday, we have our special dance at the Rainbow Bistro with the JW Jones Band for a night of swing and blues dancing on the town. In just one week, you will have all the moves you need to competently join any swing dance around town or to build on with other routines.
It is a scientific fact that dance is truly one of the the best ways for men and women to connect. Many of us were born of parents who met on the dance floor! Ottawa's Swing Dance community is one of the most friendliest groups to connect with, where people readily invite each other onto the dance floor to enjoy great music. If you haven't come out yet, you are missing a great scene.
Swing is a fantastic dance on its own or one that you can build from to take other variations that are used for modern dance music in night clubs. Men are coming back to dance these days, as the NHL hockey lock-out is channeling our love of sport into dance as a combination of sport and socializing.
How the workshop was designed?
This workshop has been designed by adult educator and dancer, John Savage based on his designing beginner dance programs for Funabalu the past two years and interviewing his members on what worked and what didn't. He learned that most want to fast-track their dance learning curve in a hurry and by experimenting, he has designed a program that will guarantee you a good night on the town swing dancing in just one week.
