gee! Volunteers: Backpacks for Homeless Kids

The gee! Volunteers are at it again!  Thanks to Joy for finding another opportunity to help.

"We've Got Your Back" is a local effort to fill backpacks with food to give homeless children for the weekend.  The kids go to school and are part of the free breakfast/lunch program, but Giving Children Hope makes sure they have food for the weekend, too.

Come with your family to help sort food into backpacks.  They requested age 5 and over.  Each family will need to fill out a volunteer application when we get there.  (I can post it on gee! so that you can fill it out beforehand.)

We will also need to get our RSVPs in by March 1st.  They need to know how many volunteers are coming.  See you there!

We’ve Got Your Back (WGYB) began as a weekend nutrition program created by Giving Children Hope for elementary students identified as homeless in Orange County’s school districts by the Orange County Department of Education under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. For the last six years, this program has provided food and nutrition education for children and families in need. Each child in the program receives enough food for three to four family members throughout the weekend. Because these students do not have access to the free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs over the weekend, this sustainable food source ensures that they always receive the nutrition they need. Due to the stigma attached to homelessness, the program is presented as a Weekend Nutrition Club where students can learn about proper nutrition and earn prizes by demonstrating knowledge of healthful eating habits while building self-esteem.

About Giving Children Hope:

Giving Children Hope is a community driven non- profit that equips front line partners with resources to serve vulnerable children and families.

GCHope is privileged to work with diverse individuals and communities both locally and around the world, providing supplies for projects that focus on needs of children and serve the poor.

GCHope works to promote family sustainability, economic independence, and self-sufficiency so that children can grow in stable environments. GCHope also plays a role in the development and rehabilitation of under-resourced clinics, hospitals, and orphanages. Our supplies mobilize organizations so that they can focus on implementation; this empowers communities to reach those caught in hopelessness and work toward self-sustainability.

Sorry, I got lost. I thought I was on Commonwealth but instead I turned on Artesia and could not find the address. When I got home, realized that I had turned on Artesia after looking on Google map. Sorry, Christianna and I missed the volunteering.

I am sorry. My mother is not well again today. It has been a struggle to go out these days. Hope we will be able to go next time.

Hi Everybody, Sadly Harmonie has come down with a cold as well. I was going to take her because she really wants to go. However, a light bulb went off in my head when she mentioned she was sick in a conversation and I realized sick kids can not handle food. It has been a busy week, can you tell? We would love to partake in this event, should we all decide to do it again. Have a good time today. Wish we could be there.

I saw an email referring to waivers to be filled out and brought but now I can't find it (I don't recall there being an attachment either). Can you re-send them or have some there for my husband/kids? Thanks.

My 11 year old and I signed up for this, but I'm coming down with a cold that has been going through our household. Maybe next time...

I will be at work but my husband and kids are excited to go. He will have the baby with him so may not be helping much himself but the kids will be very energetic in helping - ages 14, 11 and "almost 7"

Sad to say we have a conflict on that day as well. We were just talking about finding a place to do volunteer work. We look forward to helping in the future. Quick question though, my son is going to be 4 and wants to help as well…in future will he be able to join us?

I see the age is 5. Our twins turn 5 on March 24th. I am confident they would do well with this but am wondering if we should wait until the next volunteer effort happens and they are actually 5? Thank you, what a wonderful opportunity to volunteer, learn and help.

That would be great if you and the twins can join us for this event. Looking forward to seeing you there!
