Greater New Orleans Tea Party Message Board ELECTIONS 2019 .......ROAD TO VICTORY › 2018 JEFF PARISH SHERIFF'S ELECTION

Jefferson Parish will be electing a new Sheriff on March 24, 2018. Early voting is March 10-17th) The two candidates are John Fortunato and Joe Lopinto.

Please note: GNOTP does not endorse candidates. We supply research and info to our members , encourage you to do the same, and rely on YOU to vote for the candidate who you believe will best represent you.

Below is MY research and thoughts on the candidates which I want to share with you. EVERY member of GNOTP can post the same and you are encouraged to do so.

I have supplied links at the end of this post for the websites of both candidates which supply their I won't delve into that very extensively. Unfortunately, Neither website discusses ISSUES and plans for governance...but I have also supplied several videos and articles of interviews/forum/debates you should watch and read.

Job description of JP Sheriff and Mission Statement
(Don't forget the Sheriff's roll in RAISING your taxes!!!)

For me, my top priority for JP Sheriff is that his primary focus and goal is to protect citizens of JP and provide for their safety. I expect the VAST MAJORITY of his time be spent in this endeavor. Other Sheriff functions like tax collections, payroll, insurance etc can be delegated to a "bean counter" with oversight by the Sheriff.
I also want the sheriff to be honest and to share my principles of constitutional government.

Fortunato spent 46+ years working in the JPSO . To me. he is a cop's cop!! In every interaction, he emphasizes the safety of citizens as his top priority ..... and the safety of his officers.

He has a military background . He has on the job experience as a Deputy , a Detective, the Commander of the Community Relations/Crime Prevention Unit. and many years in the admin as THE Public Information Officer. To me, he has vast experience in the Sheriff's Dept. Lopinto (and others) have discounted Fortunato's time as PIO as insignificant. I beg to differ. As the person in charge of disseminating information to citizens, public agencies, civic organizations, private groups, news media etc etc etc, he had to be intimately aware of all aspects of the Sheriff's Dept. When he received a request, he had to research the answer if he didn't know it. He had close relationships with staff, attended Admin meetings, and worked closely with the sheriff and top officials. How did he hold this position for 30 years if he wasn't capable and informed???

Listen to the videos below. In every instance, Fortunato has an answer to questions and emphasizes citizens' safety in everyone. He will protect us...and delegate "bean counter" duties to a CFO or other personnel

There are several issues that are important to me that have been discussed in the videos.

Sanctuary Cities
Fortunato does not believe in Sanctuary Cities and says JP will never be one. He sees the importance of working with the Fed govt and ICE on immigration and crime and pledges that he will fully cooperate in a joint effort to keep us safe by removing illegal alien CRIMINALS from Jefferson Parish. This is different from Lopinto's position.

Criminal Justice Reform
Obama and Gov John Bel Edwards made a big push for "criminal justice reform" in an attempt to empty jails and put more criminals back on the streets. We have already seen multiple cases of released criminals in LA committing more acts of violence. I believe Fortunato has a more balanced approach. Keep dangerous criminals in jail..... don't make decisions based on the # of inmates we have. Perhaps we have more in jail because we actually catch more criminals!!!

FYI: In the news this week is a complaint that Fortunato participated in a food giveaway in Kenner. The event was held by a PRIVATE group at a Kenner Charter School. Not sure if this is private or public property or if it makes a difference. Doesn't register as a big issue for me.
Personally, I have LESS problems with this Fortunato incident than with Lopinto lying about spying on his opponent in this race:

Please watch videos below for more discussions by Fortunato.

Lopinto has 7 years of experience in the JPSO as a law enforcement officer 14 years ago.. Since completing law school in 2004 he has been the managing partner of his private business, Lopinto Law Firm, LLC, in Metairie .
He served as a LA State legislator beginning in 2007. After being re-elected and taking office in Jan 2016, he RESIGNED barely 6 months later to take a job with the JPSO as their "legal liason". A year later he was anointed Sheriff when Newell Norman decided he should resign as Sheriff in order to get a gig on the radio. Lopinto has been Sheriff for 6 months. Total time in JPSO...... about 8.5 years.

While a law degree will be helpful as Sheriff, I'm not convinced it outweighs 46 years of on the job experience for Fortunato. ( Bill Gates and Zuckerberg have both been widely successful with NO college degree).

As a constitutional conservative, I believe in the constitution as the framework for the rule of law in this country. I want elected officials who have a strong allegiance to the Constitution , who will swear to abide by it, and who will protect our conservatives!!

Personally, I am deeply troubled by the fact that Lopinto PUBLICLY ENDORSED Dem/socialist John Bel Edwards (JBE) over David Vitter in the last Governors election in 2015 AND then crossed party lines to endorse a Democrat for Speaker of our REPUBLICAN controlled House of Representatives!! (see article below)
ICYMI.... Gov Edwards TWICE endorsed global/socialist Barack Obama for president and is a believer in and pusher of Obama's Marxist agenda involving bigger government, more taxes, less freedom. Obviously Lopinto felt comfortable with this agenda.

When I recently attended a Meet and Greet with Lopinto, I asked him about this endorsement. After he accused me of "making this political" (DUH!!) he went on to admit that he thought JBE was the best candidate. He did try to muddy the waters by claiming to vote for Scott Angele..... which was in the PRIMARY and had nothing to do with his endorsement of JBE.

The second part of my question to Lopinto was....since you endorsed JBE, do you agree with him on NOT outlawing Sanctuary Cities in Louisiana ? Lopinto's response was centered on the "difficulty" he perceived in working with the Fed Govt and ICE in turning over CRIMINAL illegal aliens. He further stated that the Fed govt works separately from the states. I pointed out that the best course of action IMO, was for Jeff Parish to cooperate with the Feds to keep CITIZENS SAFE. Lopinto also used the leftist talking point about not wanting to "frighten law abiding illegals" (??) with the threat of Fed intervention out of fear they wouldn't report crimes they observed.

I also asked him to comment on JBE's (Obama's) Criminal Justice Reform let criminals out of jail...... but he did not comment on this topic. He does discuss his agreement with Edwards in the videos below.

At the Meet and Greet, an obviously emotional citizen expressed concern over the increase in crime in her "formerly safe neighborhood." They had a double murder and some break ins recently. Lopinto offered no ideas for police interventions but rather quoted crime statistics that illustrate crime is down overall in Jeff Parish. I doubt that was reassuring to this woman.

Another woman expressed concerns about the amount of Heroin in Jeff parish and asked "what can be done". Lopinto's said as long as there is a demand there will be drugs.

During his intro, Lopinto offered no ideas for how he would govern in relation to crime fighting activities. He did discuss the Sheriff's responsibilities in tax collection, payroll, and covering medical costs for employees. I get the impression that Lopinto sees his job as sheriff as CEO for the organizational management of the Dept and might delegate responsibility for developing policing activities to someone else.

Another troubling aspect for me is that Lopinto LIED about a recent incident where his deputies spied on a Fortunato private meeting in a coffee shop. Lopinto said he had no knowledge of this when clearly he did. This is NOT a good place to start a campaign and I have totally lost confidence in Lopinto's honesty and ethics as a result of this. He is very evasive when asked to explain too.
SEE article below.

I don't know how accessible Lopinto will be as Sheriff. I do know he, as a state legislator, did a good job of hiding from constituents when we were looking for support to fight against Common Core in our schools.

WHEW....These are MY thoughts so far.....
Please feel free to share yours.

UPDATE: Just got a mailer from Lopinto touting an endorsement for Sheriff from Congressman Steve Scalise. Sorry, but I think Scalise lost his "conservative" credentials 4-5 years ago when he refused to stop Obama policies and started voting and whipping the vote for RINO ESTABLISHMENT BILLS in Congress. Another black mark for Lopinto in my book.

I appreciate your usual thoughtfulness and due diligence to provide the required information for the voters to consider.

For myself, this has been a particularly difficult race. I have known both Joe and Johnny for years and consider them but personal friends.

I like many civilians were unaware of the JPSO succession continuity policy and felt that Fortunato was overlooked when Harry Lee passed away. The fact is that in accordance to the Sheriff's Dept. own policy, the Deputy Chief is the next in line for succession in the event of death or retirement of the sheriff before the end of his term. Fortunato has used this narrative of being overlooked to garner support.

To me, as I have been to the forums and paying attention to this race, I see that Johnny had set his tone as that of an angry, bitter jilted lover. But more importantly, as Sheriff Johnny, in my opinion, would be seeing the tone for the JPSO that would affect the dedication, professionalism and attitude of service that we currently enjoy from the JPSO.

As a citizen, a parent and a community leader I have to think about the future of Jefferson Parish. I would have preferred Johnny over Newell Normand after Harry Lee passed away. But ten years later we need to look to the future.

I'm voting for Joseph Lopinto for Sheriff

Thank you, Terri, for sharing your usual excellent in-depth research.

I knew Lopinto was anointed by Normand. Normand’s ideological DNA is responsible for such things as supporting Democrat Mary Landrieu over Republican John Kennedy in the 2008 Senate election; supporting Democrat John Bel Edwards for governor; and condemning the anti-sanctuary city House Bill 1148 as “overarching bull***t”.

I couldn’t shake the suspicion that Normand would only select someone of similar ideological DNA.

The information you provided has galvanized my suspicion into a conviction that Lopinto indeed possesses similar ideological DNA as Normand.

This is one of the reasons I’m voting for Fortunato.

Thanks again.

Thanks, Dennis, for reviewing the Normand/Lopinto connection. Good points. Lopinto is also closely aligned with Sen Danny Martiny who joined Normand in endorsing JBE AND demolishing any chance of HB 1148 passing.

George, thanks for your input.

I actually think "anger" can be a good thing. No one will deny that Harry Lee and Newell Normand often used it to their advantage as Sheriff. Even you often use anger wisely in pointing out injustice etc.

The ONLY reason Lopinto was "next in line" for Sheriff is because of the political gyrations of Newell Normand who suddenly had a hankering to be on the radio (seriously??) and "recruited" Lopinto to come to JPSO so he could be elevated to this position at the last minute.

As Dennis pointed out above, Sheriff Normand was vehemently opposed and testified against our attempt at outlawing Sanctuary Cities in Louisiana. While JP apparently has no formal written Sanctuary City policy, by DEFINITION....... if Parish law enforcement refuses to work with ICE..... then we ARE A SANCTUARY PARISH!!!

Obviously, I could not , in good conscience, vote for Lopinto. Either we believe in the Constitution , conservative principles, and the rule of law or we don't. Actually.... I wish YOU had run for Sheriff!! wink

Lopinto was shutout of the LA Legislature because he continually supported & voted with the Democrats in Baton Rouge. Republicans became disgusted with him and kicked him out of all committees. That's when he resigned and hooked up with no good Newell Normand.

Anyone voting for Lopinto will be voting to perpetuate massive corruption, higher taxes, more illegals, & more crime! Why allow Harry Lee & Newell Normand to decide your vote?! My vote is vehemently against Lopinto! I'm voting for Fortunato.

Thanks Terri for your input. Your info is always so valuable!

I watched Spud's and Crouere's interview with each candidate. It seems we have a choice between a politician or a policeman.

The politician was vague about working with ICE, felt focusing on taxes, networking with other politicians and making policy are important. The politician seemed very slippery when answering the question of the coffee shop spying video.

The policeman wants to keep me safe by working with ICE, getting crime down and getting police on the streets. The policeman was direct and clear when answering questions.

The politician strongly implied only college degree people could run a police department. He insulted every person who is successful who does not have a college degree.

I'm voting for the policeman....I want a smart cop being top cop.
