This amazing 6,000 acres Forest only a short train ride from London, is the largest public open space in the London area. It was once a royal hunting ground with little regard for the rights of commoners, but now open for us all to enjoy.
The forest is a site of special scientific interest with fine examples of pollarding and coppicing. and has a heard of rare breed English long horned cattle which hopefully we will see.
This walk will take us from Chingford Station to the Tudor built Queen Elizabeth hunting Lodge past the iron age hill fort at Loughton camp, Through Bell Common and High beach, where we will stop for some refreshments at the tea hut. We then continue to the Greenwich Meridian Obelisk and the pole hill view point where we will have unparalleled veiws over london and on a clear day should be able to see as far as the royal observatory at Greenwich. From here it's a short walk back to Chingford Station where you return to Liverpool street.
What you need to bring, Pack lunch and water, warm clothes, waterproof jacket, stout shoes or walking boots, Head torch or torch (just in case we finish in the dark)
