"Secret Berkshire" The Hollies and the North Wessex Downs

  • This Lovely undulating walk in a secret corner of the  Berkshire hills takes us along the Ridgeway trail from Goring Gap, climbing out of the Thames Valley to cross Streatley Common. The trail passes through the pretty villages of Aldworth and Ashamstead before descending through meadows and woodland to Stitches green, before crossing the Rver Thames to Streatley.

    Meeting Time: 09:00 London Paddington Station, next to the information booth, near the ticket office we will be catching the 09:32 train to Goring and Streatley arriving at 10.21 £13.40pp for a group of four people travelling together (click here) organiser fee £6, Total £19.40. 

    Walk details: The walk is 10m 16km with some steep hills. Due back to London 19.30

    What to Bring:

    From Goring, we cross the River Thames and ascend Lough Down and the Hollies, which gives us a vista over Goring, the Chiltern Hills and the Thames, we join Ridgeway and gradually ascend a small valley into the heart ofthe Berkshire Downs area of outstanding natural beauty.

    The track leads us through Streatley Warren, a sensitive site of special scientific interest which is only open during the autumn, then crosses a meadow to the pretty village of AldworthThe site of the Battle of Ashdown, where King Alfred defeated the Danes in 871

    From Aldworth the trail enters woodland crossing Grims Ditch an iron age earth work,to Ashamstead we turn North East then North following footpaths through fields, meadows and woodland to Stichens Green where an ascent leads us through Streatley wood.

    Descending steeply from Streatley Wood we come to Streatley Bridge where we cross the Thames to Goring where you are welcome to join us for a drink and some food or take the train home.
