Hiking in Tusheti, Georgia's most remote and serene high-mountain region.

Tucked away in the Caucasus in Georgia's far northeast-corner, Tusheti offers some of the country's most picturesque and pristine high-mountain regions. It combines visits of traditional Tush villages with some spectacular trekking. Nakaicho pass at 2920m offers some of the best views you can find in Tusheti.

The road to Tusheti is opened only 5 months of the year, usually in May, when a bulldozer clears the path and Tush shepherds herd their flocks of sheep through the Abano Pass to summer pastures in the mountains. They are followed by hikers willing to experience the remoteness along with Georgians from the lowlands here to "reconnect" with their ancient homeland.

The scenery everywhere is a spectacular mix of snow-covered rocky peaks, deep gorges, tower-dotted villages and steep, grassy meadows. Centuries-old koshkebi (defence towers) still stand in the villages as well as evidence of Tusheti's old animist religion in the form of stone shrines called khatebi. Then in the autumn shepherds drive their flocks back to the lowlands, the snow returns, the road is blocked and Tusheti falls into its winter sleep again.

We finish our trip with a day and night in Tbilisi, the most charming Caucasian capital.

The trip is graded moderate and is suitable for hikers with appropriate fitness levels to walk in mountainous terrain up to 3000 metres, for a minimum of 6 hours a day for multiple days carrying a day pack.
