  • Hike Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain, in the Lake District

A fully guided hiking weekend taking in Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain at 978m, and Great Gable, rated by Lakeland walkers as their favourite mountain. Join us in the Lake District National Park, UNESCO world heritage site, for a weekend of guided hikes and experience some of the most stunning mountain scenery the UK has to offer. Scafell Pike is iconic, not only because it is the highest in England, but also because of its history, position and the astonishing views. Alfred Wainwright described it as "the Mecca of all weary pilgrims in Lakeland......the ultimate, the supreme, the top of Scafell Pike". Great Gable is one of my favourite Lakeland mountains. It also features in Wainwright's top 6 and is described by AW as having "a good name for a mountain, strong, challenging, compelling". When you're standing on the summit presented with the fantastic panoramic views I'm sure you'll agree! Accommodation: Our hostel is set in the beautiful Borrowdale valley and has a remote feel to it whilst surrounded by landscape of epic proportions. The hostel is well-equipped with a lounge, restaurant/dining room, drying room, self-catering kitchen and a licensed bar. Meals: We will provide provisions for a simple breakfast and provisions for packed lunches for you to make up yourselves. We will also bring food for us to cook together for dinner on the Saturday evening. Cost - total cost for the weekend £160. Optional return transfer to Penrith train station £10. It is approx. 6 hours drive from North London so this is a great way to keep costs down and help the environment. Itinerary: Friday From 20:00 arrive at YHA Borrowdale for evening drinks. Saturday We will hike to the summit of Scafell Pike via the lesser known Corridor route thus avoiding the crowds on the Wasdale side. The route starts directly from the hostel and is a challenging but extremely rewarding way to climb England’s highest summit. On our return route, we can take in the additional summits of Broad Crag and Great End, before descending via Sprinkling Tarn and Styhead Tarn, for some well-earned refreshment and rest. Sunday Today we hike up to Green Gable and Great Gable via Windy Gap. This is a shorter day but no less rewarding offering fine views to Ennerdale, Crummockdale and the Scafells, scene of yesterday's epic hike. Alternatively, if group members are shattered there are plenty of low level walks to loosen the tired legs from the previous day's exertions. We return to the hostel for a quick wash and refreshment before departing to Penrith station and the journey home.
