Pathfinder Society Organized play

Greetings All,

This is an organized Pathfinder Society meetup that will repeat every two weeks. After the intro scenarios we will play the year "0" scenarios and some of the special scenarios. About one week before the game I will post the specific scenario that I will be running. New players are always welcomed.

All in all it was a fun session. Dying in the first encounter and first strike was a bit demoralizing but in this lies the excitement of the game. I appreciate the members of the party chipping in to raise my unlucky ass, Iomadae bless you all.

    Hey Everyone,

Well because the "Detect Evil" debate seems to be brought up every game night I figured we would get the final response from Richard (as he is the main GM for the group). I am going to post my side of this as in the past I have tried to have/make a discussion about it with what I have seen and found but was continually talked over and not allowed a word in edge wise and I feel in that type of forum I would not be able to express what I am about to say. Thus why I turn to here. First I will state the rule here for ease of reference it can be found in the CRB if you wish to double check. Detect Evil (Sp)

At will, a paladin can use detect evil, as the spell. A paladin can, as a move action, concentrate on a single item or individual within 60 feet and determine if it is evil, learning the strength of its aura as if having studied it for 3 rounds. While focusing on one individual or object, the paladin does not detect evil in any other object or individual within range.

It is okay =D I put it here so the discussion can be held and finished instead of beating the dead horse and taking up even more table time.

Ok.... Having a Paladin at the table myself I need to weigh in here too. I've googled around myself and think Steve makes a pretty convincing argument , that the intent is the Paladin has BOTH the spell like cone version as well as the more focused single target version at his option. As Craig pointed out, it is an unfortunate, poorly worded and ambiguous passage in the rules. Not the first, and won't be the last. As I recall reading in a forward to one of the previous editions of D&D, it's not the letter of the rule which is important but the spirit of the rule which is of paramount importance. IMHO, the spirit of the rule here, was to give the Paladin a useful combat ability that incorporates his core role to detect and destroy evil, and can be used effectively in a combat situation. How does this fit using only the spell like version? Ultimately, the ruling is up to the GM running the table and I honor his decision which ever way it goes.

    Hi All,

The next scenario will be "Before the Dawn", Pt 2, Rescue at Azlant Ridge, for levels 1 to 7. With supplies in hand, you rush from Bloodcove to the Pathfinder expedition site at Azlant Ridge only to find it under siege. You must brave the newly discovered halls beneath the ridge in order to find the key that might save everyone.

    See you Monday,

    Rick

Chalk it up to just one more example of poor editing and ambiguity on behalf of Paizo's staff,

Through my understanding and most of the people on the Piazo forums, (non official members of course if you would like links I can supply though a simple Google search will give you the same results), the ability works like this. 1) The paladin can us detect evil as per the spell at will.
    2) Furthermore the paladin can, instead of using the ability as per the spell, he can us a move action to target one person/object and gain the information as if they used the 3 rounds from the spell. While doing so they do not gain any information that they normally would have in the cone of the spell.

The debate is if the paladin can do both and can choose what one to use or do they just have access to the second one. As stated above I have looked at the forums and have seen many people have marked the original post back in 2009/2010 for an FAQ and it has been marked as answered yet it is not on the Piazo offical FAQ. Because of this a new post has started asking for an FAQ on the ability.
(Got cut off in the copy paste)

Again hoping since Richard is the main GM for our group he will come with a final verdict so that way this debate can finally be over with (as it is rather redundant for it to keep happening). I apologize for bringing it here and the quad post (only allows 1000 characters per post) but as I don't have most of the groups contact information I turned to here and wanted to get this settled before the next adventure. I thank you all for your time and look forward to hearing/seeing you all.

What makes me believe that they get both, as well with many others, is a couple of things. First would be the fact that it is stated that the paladin "can" do the second action as well as "can" use detect evil as per the spell (leaving the ability for choice if the paladin wants to or not). The second would be the fact that at the end of the ability they state that while they are doing the focusing on the individual/object that they do not gain information that they normally would gain in the cone (showing again that access to the original ability of the spell is available but by using the second part, to gain the knowledge of one target faster, they lose the ability to gain information from all in the cone.) Finally the fact that detect evil is not on the paladins spell list. Other detects are: Charm, poison, disease, faithful and undead yet the spell detect evil is not. Why would it be on the paladins spell list if they already have access to it through a spell like ability.
