Spring Hike to Fire Island

Everyone seemed to enjoy the Fire Island hike last year so I am planning another one this year.  Right now the spring ferry schedule isn't available, so I will post more specific times later, but wanted to get the date on the calendar.  We will do the same as last year – hike Fire Island then have dinner at the Cull House.

I mention times below but please be aware they are approximate at this point.

Summary
This will be a hike on Fire Island which is a barrier island off the south shore of Long Island.  After a LIRR trip from Penn Station we will take the Sayville Ferry to Fire Island.  We will first hike the Sunken Forest, which is a rare untouched ecological habitat.  We will then walk back to Cherry Grove and head to the Pines passing through the infamous “Meat Rack”  Once we get to the Pines we will change pace and walk along the ocean.  Depending on time we may make it as far as Barretts Beach.  We will take the 5:45 (approximate) ferry back to Sayville from the Pines.   This is the last ferry for the day so if we miss it we all spend the night in the Meat Rack!

From the terminal in Sayville we will take a short walk and have dinner at a local joint called the Cull House.  Serving basic seafood and pastas, Yelp gives it mostly positive reviews.

Penn Station – Where to meet?
Let’s meet in front of the Starbucks near the LIRR tracks in the lower level concourse.  The concourse has an A/C/E subway station on one end and a 1/2/3 subway station on the other end. Starbucks, and the LIRR tracks, are closer to the 1/2/3.  Note there is a Starbucks close to the A/C/E station but that is NOT where to meet.

Remember, we are meeting at 9:30 and get your round trip ticket to Sayville before joining the group.

Temperature
Remember to bring warm clothing and good shoes.  Expect it to be 10 degrees cooler on Fire Island.

Fees
RT ticket from Penn Station to Sayville:  $25.50
Bus from Train Station to Fire Island Ferry:  $5.00
RT Fire Island Ferry Ticket:  $16.00
Transport from Cull House to Train Station:  ???  Hopefully we will have enough drivers who can take us to the train station.
Cull House Dinner:  $20 -$40

Sunscreen

Bring it.  Use it.

Cell Phones
I know from experience that AT&T service is terrible on Fire Island.  I hear Verizon is supposed to be better since they have a tower on the island.

Lunch
Bring a packed lunch and/or some substantial snacks.   We will take a break at some point early into the hike, most likely in the sunken forest.  I don’t believe there will be any stores open on Fire Island.

Dinner
Like last year I estimate we will get to the Cull House at 6:30.  They will take our drink and dinner order at the same time so we aren’t pressed for time.  Please take a look at the Cull House menu and determine what you want in advance.  Also, try to bring cash so settling up is easier.  Figure a 20% gratuity.

A very friendly moment, despite the very unfriendly weather. Undoubtedly a very special day to discover Fire Island. Phil : thank you so much.

Arrived at terminal, anyone board the ferry yet?

I *really* hate to back out of this one. But I just don't have proper gear to protect me from a steady 45-degree rain. And unemployment is preventing me from investing in it right now. (Shameless plug: If you know of anyone that needs an Office Manager or Executive Assistant or HR/Benefits coordinator, keep me in mind!)
But I'll see y'all at the next hike!

I didn't get a big hug, Phil. But that's ok. I don't need your love. I've got my pale skin to keep me warm.

Last year when I was on Fire Island during the early spring, I saw a pair of gorgeous red foxes on the (hurricane-devastated) dunes in the Meat Rack. I did some research, as I'd never seen foxes in the Meat Rack (well, not THOSE types of foxes) and it seems that they are in fact native to the island, but retreat to more remote places during the busy summer months. Apparently they live in the Sunken Forest year-round. Hope we can catch a glimpse!

For those of us who haven't done this hike before, what's the route we'll follow? And, btw, it's going to be a little chilly in the meat rack, no? :-)

I am from Europe. I have heard so much about your Fire Island (and movies): it will be my first time. I am so excited!
