Day Trip to Santa Barbara via Amtrak Train

Join us for a day trip to Santa Barbara via the Amtrak Train.

Take a relaxing trip on Amtrak for the day to beautiful Santa Barbara - whitewashed walls, red-tile roofs, gentle slopes, lapping waves, swaying fronds, stately churches and private estates. Cozy, comfortable and great to meet and socialize with our members as we use affordable Amtrak to take us to Santa Barbara.

On Saturday, September 15, 2012 the Amtrak trains we will take are as follows:

You are responsible for purchasing your own Amtrak ticket or making your own transportation arrangements to meet the group in Santa Barbara. You can also choose to embark on the train from other cities on the route (like Glendale,) but be sure you are on the same train line when we come by.

To purchase a ticket for travel, utilize the Santa Barbara Car Free Train 20% Discount offer on their website. Go to:

You must register on this webpage to obtain the link to the Amtrak's site to purchase your discount ticket. Have your information and credit card for ticket purchase ready before you complete the registration because you will need to purchase ticket right after you register. You may not use the discount for purchasing a ticket on board the train, purchasing a ticket at any station, nor for purchasing a gift certificate. If you prefer to purchase a full price ticket by phone you can call Amtrak at (800)[masked] but you will not be able to get the 20% discount.

Once you have purchased your round trip ticket, please update your RSVP to “CONFIRMED – TKT PURCHASED.” You will have until September 5, 2012 to purchase your ticket and confirm your attendance before you are moved to the “Waiting List”. If you are on the “Waiting List” and decide you want to go, purchase your ticket and change your RSVP to “Yes” and indicate ”CONFIRMED – TKT PURCHASED” so I will know the total count of people that will be going.

There is a fee for parking at Union Station, or park on the street and read the signs!

This event will require a lot of walking. Wear comfortable walking shoes, a sweater or jacket, a hat for sun protection, and sunglasses. Also bring money for lunch, dinner and shopping.

Option 1: Take the bus or walk to Mission Santa Barbara. The official literature calls Mission Santa Barbara "Queen of the Missions for its graceful beauty." Founded on December 4th, 1786, it was the tenth of 21 Franciscan missions in California. It still functions as a church today and a “must-visit” when in Santa Barbara.

Intermezzo is a fun and vibrant space, designed as a place to meet for a quick flatbread, a glass of wine from their innovative and green tap system or a cocktail. They offer chopped salads, flatbreads, small plates of food and a fantastic line-up of gourmet burgers. Choose to dine alfresco on the historic courtyard at a table next to the fountain or European-style on the the front portico.

We had a great time on this trip, and a fun time. After a great lunch at Paradise Cafe, some of us toured the town on foot and others walked over to the mission. After the tour and visiting the Alice Keck Memorial Garden Tan and I went for a bike ride on the beach and had a lobster dinner on the pier. Some also went to Intermezzo Wine Bar. Overall about 17 of us were on the trip from 2 different groups - and we all really enjoyed the day in Santa Barbara escaping from the L.A. heat.

    Hi Louis,

I would love to go. I would join you at the Glendale stop. Do I upgrade to business class?

    • Louis

Yes you can join the train in Glendale. I bought a coach seat. It's totally up to you if you'd like to upgrade to business class, but probably most of us will be sitting in coach.
