We had a lovely discussion on the Sons of Liberty at Babycakes earlier this week; let's keep the comics ball rolling!
This month, we'll be reading Little White Duck: A Childhood in China by the husband & wife team of Na Liu and Andres Vera Martinez. This book provides glimpses into Liu's childhood in China during the Cultural Revolution. It's beautifully illustrated by Martinez, and promises to be an excellent source of conversation fodder.
This book has 5 copies in the City library system, and 11 are available through the County's ILL system. You can also order it from Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Little-White-Duck-Childhood-Single/dp/0761381155/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359146214&sr=8-1&keywords=little+white+duck, and I have a copy. The DCMA makes it nigh impossible to find digital copies, sorry folks. There's also a great review of it in the NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/11/books/review/little-white-duck-by-na-liu-and-andres-vera-martinez.html?_r=0 (written by a former CBC author!).
To enhance our discussion of the book, we'll be having dinner together at Emerald. Here is their webpage: http://www.emeraldrestaurant.com/index.htm (click on any of the buttons to get pages in English) and here is their yelp review: http://www.yelp.com/biz/emerald-chinese-san-diego (it's true the service is not great, but it's a pretty typical level for a traditional Chinese place). They have a parking lot and are well equipped for large groups. Please bring cash to settle up the bill; it makes it so much easier.
Comic book club is open to all; co-ed and non-Geek Girls are welcome! Bring a couple people you think might be interested to share in our conversation. As always, feel free to bring any suggestions to our meeting or add them to our list on the discussion page. Looking forward to reading and talking about this book!
