• GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet - November, NaNoGeKo
18+ event National Novel GeekOut... yeah, I didn't think that acronym through properly. Better suggestions on a stamped addressed envelope to our PO box, when we get a PO box. It's Novel Writing Month! Take to your keyboards, because November is the time to overcome the blank page, and put your story to page, but by GeekOut it might be worth taking a day off in pursuit of inspiration! We are inspiration. ----------------------- PRE-MEET 12:00 Midday (Poll pending) ----------------------- Advanced coffee and cake before gaming, venue TBD according to the poll that will be posted on the Facebook page on the 22nd. If you're free early and determined to get a quick game with your caffeine fix before the main meet, come and say here. ----------------------- MAIN EVENT: 14:00 - Midnight ----------------------- On to Monty's Tower for the long haul to midnight! Gaming, geeky company and conversation. ----------------------- QUIZ (19:00) ----------------------- Where's the middle ground here? I can't seem to find a nice balance between gruelling slog and uncomfortably easy. This month's theme is literature! If you're still fighting your way through NaNoWriMo... well here's something to push your mind through the last 24 hours, and make that final push feel like a relief rather than a mad scramble. ----------------------- BOARD GAMES ----------------------- On the list this month, the games library will include, but is not limited to: - Braggart - Bucket of Doom - Cards Against Humanity - Cthulhu Dice - DC Deck Builder - Dungeon Roller - Eight Minute Empires - Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards 2 Rumble at Castle Tentakill - Fluxx (assorted) - Kingdomino - Love Letter - Magic: the Gathering - Munchkin - One Night Revolution - Rhino Hero - Saboteur - Tsuro - Welcome To The Dungeon - Werewolf - Zombie Dice More games might appear. ----------------------- VIDEO GAMES ----------------------- For quiz-based reasons the projector will be up and running, so post quiz there will be the option to bust open a game or two. No more screwing around with board games and forgetting to set up the laptop! Promise. ----------------------- COSPLAY ----------------------- Cosplay is behaviour we condone and encourage at GeekOut events, and remember the more you cosplay the more often others will be encouraged to do so.

  • GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet - November 29th: NaNoGeKo
18+ event How convenient that this should fall on the week of full moon. Embrace the beast within, it's lycanthropy month, and werebeasties of all breeds are welcome. Check your silver at the door, no entry permitted to vampires or those damn Van Helsing types. ----------------------- PRE-MEET 12:00 Midday (Poll pending) ----------------------- Polling for this months venue will begin on Facebook on the 18th! Be sure to vote or comment if you intend to be there, so we can give the venue an idea of how many to expect. EDIT: We will be at the Boiler Room on Hill's Lane from 12 until about 2. See you there. ----------------------- MAIN EVENT: 14:00 - Midnight ----------------------- Back to Montgomery's tower, and I think we all know what game is going to be seeing the most play time when the theme is Lycanthropy (although new attendees may not be quite so aware, we'll show you). An ever dwindling number of posters remain for purchase at this month's main event. £2 is the requested donation, but you can pay whatever you'd like to keep GeekOut going. ----------------------- TWO SENTENCE HORROR ----------------------- It needn't take a month and three thousand words to write a passable horror, it's possible to write a horror story in only two sentences. Google it! There's loads... Oh, but try not to steal them, because I want you try writing your own two sentence horror story. The best, be it the scariest, cleverest, or otherwise bestest, gets this months' disappointing prize. Second and third places will also be "rewarded". ----------------------- VIDEO GAMES ----------------------- Video games as a maybe, although this time I'll be sure to get the projector hooked up early this time so that if we do get around to it we'll be ready. ----------------------- COSPLAY ----------------------- Cosplay is behaviour we condone and encourage at GeekOut events, and remember the more you cosplay the more often others will be encouraged to do so. As it's Halowe'en (and as I was asked nicely) we shall also have a costume competition! More chances for prizes, but as this was uploaded late, you don't have long to get costumed up!

  • GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet - September 27, Harry Potter and the Shrewsbury Geeks
18+ event Harry Potter and the Shrewsbury Geeks. The kids are back at school, time to celebrate that geekiest centre of academe, Hogwarts. Don wizardly robes, carry wands securely, and study hard, for it is a quiz month... ----------------------- PRE-MEET 12:00 Midday (Poll pending) ----------------------- As the notion of a meal fell rather flat, we shall resume the usual cycle of pre-game coffees and cakes for the noon pre-meet. Expect the poll by the 20th. Remember to vote or comment if you plan to attend so that the venue can be given an accurate head count. ----------------------- MAIN EVENT: 14:00 - Midnight ----------------------- Montgomery's Tower... not so tower-like as the spires of Hogwarts, but it's ours for the day for gaming, conversation and revelry. Posters will be available once again for a suggested price of £2, but you can pay what you want to take a piece of GeekOut with you, and to make next month's event just that little bit better. All proceeds go to next month's meet. EDIT - See you tomorrow in the Hole In The Wall pub by Natwest. ----------------------- QUIZ ----------------------- If you are not so knowledgeable in matters of the Harry Potter universe then I have good news. If you are, then I have... mixed news. Categories in this month's quiz will be based on subjects that one might learn at Hogwarts: Divination, Tranfiguration, Herbalism, Defence Against The Dark Arts, Potions... honestly haven't decided yet, haven't written the quiz. As usual, expect the worst. ----------------------- BOARD GAMES ----------------------- On the list this month, the games library will include, but is not limited to: - Braggart - Bucket of Doom - Cards Against Humanity - Cthulhu Dice - DC Deck Builder - Dungeon Roller - Eight Minute Empires - Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards 2 Rumble at Castle Tentakill - Fluxx (assorted) - Great Scott! - Love Letter - Magic: the Gathering - Munchkin - One Night Revolution - Rhino Hero - Saboteur - Tsuro - Welcome To The Dungeon - Werewolf - Zombie Dice More games might appear. ----------------------- VIDEO GAMES ----------------------- We never did use the projector last month. Nevertheless, we shall still be ready and waiting with computer and cables to play games large and vibrant on the projector screen. Still perusing the possibilities of future titles, but the old favourites will be present and correct. ----------------------- COSPLAY ----------------------- Cosplay is behaviour we condone and encourage at GeekOut events, and remember the more you cosplay the more often others will be encouraged to do so.

  • GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet - August 30th: Tengen Toppa GeekOut Lagann
18+ event Ours is the title that can pierce the character limit! Kick forth into August with power and enthusiasm! Tengen Toppa GeekOut Lagann! Who the hell do you think we are? Come join us for a day of geeking, gaming, conversing, and mech building. ----------------------- PRE-MEET 12:00 Midday (Poll pending) ----------------------- This time, we’re going out for a nice meal. I have a few ideas of where we might go for the midday pre-meet, but I’m willing to hear out options before I put the vote up on Thursday the 16th, which will give me the time I need to go and ensure the table is booked SO MAKE SURE you either vote or comment. If you don’t you will not be added to the head count and will not be guaranteed a place. ----------------------- MAIN EVENT: 14:00 - Midnight ----------------------- After a long hiatus we return to Monty’s Tower for games and geekery. This month we once again compete for disappointing prizes, bust out the projector for some big-screen video gaming, and bust out the board games library. I also hear that a few of you have cosplay ideas in mind. ----------------------- COMPETITION: BUILD-A-MECH ----------------------- Build your armoured battlesuit, your walking vehicle with a massive face, your Ganmen, your Gundam, your Jaeger, but build it out of a toilet roll tube. Your base must be a toilet roll tube, and must have arms, legs, and a face. Bonus points will be awarded for being able to seat a tiny Lego pilot, especially if they achieve maximum synergy with their mech, because it’s the only way to fight at maximum potential! - Love Letter - Magic: the Gathering - Munchkin - Rhino Hero - Saboteur - Tsuro - Welcome To The Dungeon - Werewolf - Zombie Dice More games might appear. ----------------------- VIDEO GAMES ----------------------- Back to the projector, Worms, Keep Talking, and whatever else I can find to install that looks like fun. One other thing… ----------------------- COSPLAY ----------------------- So I hear a few of you are keen on the idea of cosplaying for this month’s GeekOut. We condone and encourage this behaviour, but it’s always better cosplaying when you know there are more of you doing so. Keep it on theme, or don’t, but remember if you choose to show up in costume you will have company.

  • GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet - July 19th: Steampunk'd
18+ event By Jove! Such a shock I dropped my monocle, my moustache has broken free of its formative wax shell. Don a waistcoat, bowler hat, lace, ruffles, goggles, brass gauntlets fed by glowing pipes, (Google Ral Zarek) and climb into my zeppelin! We’re going on an adventure to lands unknown, lands with economic equality, and magic coal that can produce any result desired. GeekOut Shrewsbury is getting Steampunk’d. ----------------------- PRE-MEET 12:00 Midday (Poll pending) ----------------------- Is it a milkshake thing? Every time I put a place with decent milkshakes up on the list you vote in your hordes. Expect the vote on 12th of July for the venue for pre-games gaming and a quick coffee. Unless this heatwave keeps up, in which case, more cold drinks. EDIT - In accordance with the hastily altered vote, we will be at The Bear Steps Cafe at St Alkmonds Place ----------------------- MAIN EVENT: 14:00 - Midnight ----------------------- This month, to make up for the long wait you will have to endure to next GeekOut Shrewsbury – a whopping six weeks – this July will feature not one but TWO competitions! Which means twice the chances for a disappointing prize, along with the usual roster of fun and games. ----------------------- THE BIG GEEK PUB QUIZ (19:30) ----------------------- I need to step up my game, some of you folks are starting to get wise to my quiz questions! Dig deep into that font of knowledge, because we are going to get weird with trivia. Teams of no more than three, feel free to try and solo the quiz but as yet no one has come close on their own. ----------------------- “STICK SOME GEARS ON IT” INVENTORS FAIR ----------------------- Great Scott! Time to get some prep-work done, bust out the hot glue gun and the degree in weird-engineering, because we are competing in the field of innovation. Bring your best doodad, gizmo, or… something you had lying around the house you stuck some gears onto and called it Steam-Punk. Pitch your invention to the judges (me, with different hats). There can be only one victor, because I’m only bringing one prize for this one. There might be ribbons. The ribbons… might have gears on them. ----------------------- BOARD GAMES ----------------------- On the list this month: - Braggart - Bucket of Doom - Cards Against Humanity - Cthulhu Dice - DC Deck Builder - Dungeon Roller - Eight Minute Empires - Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards 2 Rumble at Castle Tentakill - Fluxx (assorted) - Great Scott! - Love Letter - Magic: the Gathering - Rhino Hero - Saboteur - Steam Punk Munchkin (Steam Punchkin) - Tsuro - Welcome To The Dungeon - Werewolf - Zombie Dice ----------------------- VIDEO GAMES ----------------------- I am hereby looking for something thematic to add to my Steam library… or is playing games on Steam thematic enough? Short-form games, steampunk theme, suggestions welcome!

  • GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet - June '18: Gamer's Gauntlet
18+ event Dare you run the Gamer’s Gauntlet?! Yeah, you probably do, I know you guys well enough at this point to know you’re always up for a game or two. But June 28th will put your dice rolling, card counting, fast clicking skills to the test… ----------------------- PRE-MEET 12:00 Midday (Poll pending) ----------------------- Venue poll will be up on Facebook on the 21st, probably best if we look for places with a decent selection of cold drinks as the weather gets warmer. Remember to vote or comment in the poll as early as possible so that the venue can be warned of the number of attendees, it’s only fair. EDIT - The votes are in, and the pre-meet venue is The Pour House! Is it a milkshake thing? See you there at 12 ----------------------- MAIN EVENT: 14:00 - Midnight ----------------------- A library of board games, a projector throwing video games to screen, and some generally high quality company, we reconvene in Montgomery’s Tower for ten hours of solid geekiness. ----------------------- GAMER’S GAUNTLET (19:00 - 21:00) ----------------------- Get your game faces on! I mean… you’re coming to GeekOut, so presumably you came with it on anyway, but… anyway, beside the point. You will have two hours to play as many games as you can! All the games you play must be different, all of them have to be verified (so even if you play a solo game you have to have a witness), and all the games have to be played to the end! Win, lose, or draw, all games have to be played to a satisfactory conclusion, no folding, seceding, or knocking the Rhino’s tower down. Most games played, wins. There’s a disappointing prize in it for the winner, and something worse for second and third. ----------------------- BOARD GAMES ----------------------- On the list this month: - Braggart - Bucket of Doom - Cards Against Humanity - DC Deck Builder - Dungeon Roller - Eight Minute Empires - Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards 2 Rumble at Castle Tentakill - Fluxx (assorted) - Cthulhu Dice - Love Letter - Magic: the Gathering - Munchkin - Rhino Hero - Saboteur - Tsuro - Welcome To The Dungeon - Werewolf - Zombie Dice ----------------------- VIDEO GAMES ----------------------- Worms is a hit then, so was Keep Talking, and a few Jackbox games don’t hurt. Come to me with ideas for what to play next! My Steam Library is… excessive, and I am glad to share with you guys.

  • GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet - May 31st: May The GeekOut Be With You
18+ event Do you feel it moving through you in a not-entirely-platonic way? That’s GeekOut my friend, and it moves through us all, shaping us, empowering us, and for a select few of us allowing us to move stuff with our mind and give us other non-specific superpowers. ----------------------- PRE-MEET 12:00 Midday (Poll pending) ----------------------- Chilling and light gaming over a hot drink and baked confections. The poll for this month’s venue will be up on the Facebook event page on Thursday the 24th, remember to vote or comment if you plan to attend so that the venue can be forewarned in case of a large group. EDIT: The premeet will be held at The Little Dessert Shop after a pretty conclusive vote. They've been told to expect 8, although we may see nearer a dozen. See you tomorrow... ----------------------- MAIN EVENT: 14:00 - Midnight ----------------------- Moving on to Monty’s Tower for the remainder of the day and busting out the rest of the games library and hook the nice shiny laptop up to the projector… this time with a full battery charge so we don’t have to beg for an extension cable… just someone to come out with a ladder. ----------------------- THE BIG GEEK PUB QUIZ – SCIENCE FRICTION (19:30) ----------------------- Last month’s BGPQ was beaten with more than half the possible points! I will try and curb the temptation to up the difficulty curve from “You’ve got to be kidding, right?” To “This is preposterous!” This month’s theme will be sci-fi, everything from Frankenstein to Doctor Who, with a host of questions in between. Don’t forget that extra points go to the best team name, this month another point if it’s science fiction themed. ----------------------- BOARD GAMES ----------------------- On the list this month: - Braggart - Bucket of Doom - Cards Against Humanity - DC Deck Builder - Dungeon Roller - Eight Minute Empires - Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards 2 Rumble at Castle Tentakill - Fluxx (assorted) - Cthulhu Dice - Love Letter - Magic: the Gathering - Munchkin - Rhino Hero - Saboteur - Tsuro - Welcome To The Dungeon - Werewolf - Zombie Dice ----------------------- VIDEO GAMES ----------------------- On the projector this week, in addition to Worms Reloaded, we will also have the option of Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes. I’ll also load up Hidden Folks for those who want to take their “Where’s Wally” game up a few notches! ----------------------- OTHER GOINGS ON ----------------------- Some of you may have heard, I’ll be hosting another role-play event the weekend before this month’s GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet, at the British Ironworks Centre near Oswestry! Places are booking up, so if you are interested in taking part get in touch at The Shropshire Dungeon Master.

  • GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet - April 26th: Marvel vs. DC
18+ event Look! Up in the sky! It’s the sun, stop staring doofus, you’re gonna do some damage. Most superheroes don’t even fly, and honestly most of the really good ones don’t ----------------------- PRE-MEET 12:00 Midday (Poll pending) ----------------------- Fika and games, take a moment to stop and contemplate over a hot drink, fulfilling snack, and a few moments of spiteful competition that perversely brings us closer as people. Keep an eye out for the poll on Facebook on Thursday the 19th to choose our pre-meet venue. Remember to either vote or comment on the poll so that we can get an accurate headcount of attendance so that our venue can be forewarned. ----------------------- MAIN EVENT: 14:00 – Midnight at MONTY’S TOWER ----------------------- It’s time to throw down your infinity gauntlets, show your steel, and go head to head in a battle for supremacy! Or just come and chill out for a bit, play some games, grab some food. We’ll be in the VIP section to the right in Montgomery’s Tower Wetherspoons, right underneath the projector which we can now operate! Expect gaming options to grow month by month and more video game oriented competitions. ----------------------- SUPER POWER BAR FIGHT (AND CAKE) UNTIL 21:00 ----------------------- With a little help from our friends at Thor’s-Kin Podcast, we’re going to be staging our very own super-powered bar fight! But no breaking of the fixtures and fittings, there are going to be rules (TBD), and cake, and prizes, and disappointment*. ----------------------- COSPLAY ----------------------- The question gets asked once or twice, we highly encourage cosplay, and given this month’s comic-book theme we encourage picking a side and flying the colours for your favourite Marvel or DC character. That said, you can show up as any comic book character you like. Or any other character you like. Or not… if you like. We like. ----------------------- BOARD GAMES ----------------------- In the library this month: - Braggart - Bucket of Doom - Cards Against Humanity - DC Deck Builder - Dungeon Roller - Eight Minute Empires - Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards 2 Rumble at Castle Tentakill - Fluxx (assorted) - Cthulhu Gloom - Love Letter - Magic: the Gathering - Munchkin - Rhino Hero - Tsuro - Welcome To The Dungeon - Werewolf - Zombie Dice ----------------------- GEEKOUT SHREWSBURY CINEMEET ----------------------- Who wants to go see Infinity War? Tickets are available at Cineworld Shrewsbury right now! Keep an eye on the GeekOut South-West Facebook page for a separate event and come join us for our first big film trip. ----------------------- *Disappointment comes with a money back guarantee, which I’m sure would be reassuring if you’d paid any money.

  • GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet - March 29th: March At The Movies
    • What we'll do 18+ event Who’s ready to go again? Oh, and happy anniversary to GeekOut Shrewbury! To celebrate we’re going to be doing much the same as we did last month, but better, because we’ve always gotten better. ----------------------- PRE-MEET 12:00 Midday (Poll pending) ----------------------- A quick stop off for a brew, maybe some cake, possibly an early lunch, maybe some Magic, a bit of light gaming before we dig into the real meat of the day. Keep an eye on the GeekOut South-West Facebook for the poll to choose our venue. PLEASE only vote in the poll if you intend to be there, or if you plan to go to the pre-meet and don’t want to vote please comment so that I can warn the venue if we have similar numbers to last month’s incredible early turn out. EDIT: The premeet will be at the Boiler Room on Hills Lane, across the car park from Monty's. ----------------------- MAIN EVENT: 14:00 - Midnight ----------------------- Board games and simply superb company in a welcoming environment with good food at reasonable prices; we reconvene at Monty’s Tower for the monthly geekery. Here’s what’s on the cards for this month: - ----------------------- THE BIG GEEK PUB QUIZ – MOVIE MONTH (19:30) ----------------------- In the absence of a red carpet or anything else particularly film oriented all of our questions will be film focussed. No literature, anime, gaming or comic categories, instead expect films based on books, manga, comic-books and video ga- oh hang on a minute… Swat up on your films, bust out the DVDs and the Netflix account, and trawl IMdb until you know things that will be useless in any other situation! There are disappointing prizes to be had for the top three quiz teams, and a real let-down for the winners. ----------------------- A NEW TOY ----------------------- So you know that projector? No promises, but there is a laptop! This month we play around to try and get it working, and if it does then we will have a little light video gaming on the big screen. I have Worms (the video game, not the parasite) ready and waiting to go. ----------------------- BOARD GAMES ----------------------- The games library is back to normal, somewhat less tentacular than last month’s Lovecraftian selection, the standards are back. On the list this month: - Braggart - Bucket of Doom - Cards Against Humanity - DC Deck Builder - Dungeon Roller - Eight Minute Empires - Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards 2 Rumble at Castle Tentakill - Fluxx (assorted) - Cthulhu Gloom - Love Letter - Magic: the Gathering - Munchkin - Rhino Hero - Tsuro - Welcome To The Dungeon - Werewolf - Zombie Dice ----------------------- OTHER GOINGS ON ----------------------- I appear to have reached my character limit, for full details head to the Facebook page which enforces no such limits. • What to bring • Important to know

  • GeekOut Shrewsbury - Sweet Lovecraft
18+ event Best to get this one up early, as those of you interested in taking part in the competition may want to get a head start. See below for details. February is a time of year for wondering where January went… and love! A time for desperately scrambling for last minute romantic gestures, proudly proclaiming yourselves above such things, or quietly ruing not having a significant other with which to share romantic smugness. Not to worry! All such things are insignificant compared to the unknowable depths of space and time’s unassailable progress. Rejoice, The End, an end, all endings draw nearer. This month, we celebrate Sweet Lovecraft. ----------------------- PRE-MEET 12:00 Midday (Poll pending) ----------------------- Who wants to get this madness started? Come join us at noon for the pre-meet coffees, food, and warmup games. The poll will open for the venue on Facebook, check the GeekOut South-West page on Thursday 15/2 to cast your vote. Remember to only vote if you plan to attend, so that the venue can be forewarned if the group is large. EDIT: Results of the poll are fairly conclusive, the Pour House opposite the Welsh Bridge. See you there at 12. ----------------------- MAIN EVENT: 14:00 - Midnight ----------------------- Games and geekery, the board game library will be open (with a sign this time… last month someone wandered off with Cards Against Humanity, they brought it back but still, food for thought) and the competition entries will be judged. Come hang out in the right hand section of Monty’s Tower from 14:00 onwards. ----------------------- COMPETITION – ARTS AND LOVECRAFTS ----------------------- This is where you may wish to get a head start folks, as for the first time our competition will require you to make something, and better if you can do it ahead of time. Bring us your best Valentines Cards, themed to the eldritch and cosmically terrible horror of H.P. Lovecraft.* Your cards will be judged on creativity, artistic quality, sentiment, ability to withstand maddening knowledge, and puns. Tentacles are encouraged, but not required, and prizes will of course be disappointing. We love you all to the stars and back… but we should never have made that journey… ----------------------- GAMES ----------------------- In this month’s board games library there may be something of a theme, as we’re going Lovecraftian then there’s going to be more than a slight hint of Cthulhu about the list, including Arkham Horror, which despite the length of time required to set up and put away, we are finally going to play! Here’s this month’s games: - Arkham Horror - Bucket of Doom - Cards Against Humanity - Cthulhu Dice - Cthulhu Fluxx - Cthulhu Gloom - Cthulhu Love Letter - DC Deck Builder - Dungeon Roller - Eight Minute Empires - Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards 2 Rumble at Castle Tentakill - Magic: the Gathering - Munchkin - Rhino Hero - Tsuro - Welcome To The Dungeon - Werewolf - Zombie Dice This year’s planned GeekOut Shrewsbury Meets are listed on the GeekOut South-West Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/GeekOutSouthWest/) page, but remember dates and themes are subject to change, and per some conversations with regulars in the group there may be other events on the horizon. Keep an eye on GeekOut South-West (https://geekoutsw.com/) for my details. * If you are unfamiliar with the works of H.P. Lovecraft, there are plenty of free audiobooks and videos available online. Check out Librivox for some of the best readings.
