Recreational Paddle Instruction on Lake Lanier and the Chestatee or Etowah

  • Jul 20, 2013 · 9:30 AM

Whether you are a beginning kayaker or someone who’s been paddling for years and never had any formal training - NOW is the time to improve your skills and become a better paddler! The Georgia Canoe Association (GCA) is offering Recreational Paddling Classes in 2013. All classes are taught by ACA certified instructors. These classes will cover basic safety, strokes, and other essentials of recreational paddling. Suitable boats include recreational or touring kayaks, sit on top kayaks and canoes.

This session will be taught by Brannen Proctor. The Saturday session will be at a park on the west side of Lake Lanier, and the Sunday session will be on either the Chestatee or Etowah River.

$105 for non-members and $70 for members. Non-member pricing includes GCA Membership.

Follow this link to register! YOU MUST FOLLOW THE LINK TO REGISTER. PAYMENT AND RSVP DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE REGISTERED. WITHOUT COMPLETING THE REGISTRATION THE INSTRUCTOR IS NOT NOTIFIED.

I paddle a sit on top kayak and am comfortable on the Nantahala (except for the class 3 at the end). Will this class offer instruction that will help me be able to do class 3 rapids? Thanks!

I'm sure that there would be a few things that you would learn, but if you ate already on the Nantahala you probably already have most of the skills you need. I really like the GCA classes, but in your case I would recommend just going on some trips to get more river time. Nantahala Falls is just class 2 with a hydraulic and wave at the bottom. As long as you don't mess up the top part the rest is easy, BUT don't mess up the class 2 part! Sign up for the Facebook page and there are free trips posted on the gapaddle.com website.

One more question - is this a one or two day class? The description says something about meeting Sunday on the river. Is the $70 fee for both days? Thanks!

Can anyone recommend a good place to stay the night? It's a 2+ hour commute each way for me, I think I'll just stay the night in the area.

So far you are the only one on meetup. In order to be truly registered you need to pay and complete the registration form by following the link. Once you have done so the instructor will be notified and contact you with the details. If you are the only person it is a bonus for yoy as you will receive one on one instruction which is typically much more costly.

Does one need her own kayak? If so, can you recommend somewhere to rent one?

      Thanks for the info.

Outside World in Dawsonville is a great place for all your paddling need and they also do military discount.
