  • Picnic Sierra Club Centennial Group (NW Metro Atlanta)

    Join us for our annual CENTENNIAL GROUP POTLUCK PICNIC at East Cobb Park, Pavilion #1, 3322 Roswell Rd, Marietta 30068 (no regular meeting at Life University). Fun starts at 5:30pm with setup, check-in & social plus optional, easy walk (or we'll walk after dinner). Buffet POTLUCK dinner at 6:30pm. We will provide veggie pizza, assorted drinks, ice, and ice cream. PLEASE RSVP (so we know how much pizza to order) and BRING A DISH TO SHARE (appetizer, salad, side dish, dessert, etc.). Bring your own re-usable plate/bowl/cup & utensils (but we'll have extra in case you forget). You may bring your own preferred entree or drinks (no alcohol).   • Sunday Morning at East Palisades

    Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area - East Palisades

    Join the Sierra Club on this Sunday on a hike in the East Palisades unit of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. We will walk about 3-4 miles starting at the Indian Trail trailhead at the end of Indian Trail (short distance on gravel road; keep going until the end of the gravel road) off of Northside Drive.   • Clean Energy Conversations Georgia: Northwest

    It's Time to Talk Clean Energy for Georgia! The Georgia Beyond Coal Campaign, Sierra Club - Georgia Chapter, the Centennial Sierra Club, Coosa River Basin Initiative, Partnership for Southern Equity, and local community partners will host the Clean Energy Conversations Georgia: Northwest, a community dinner and discussion on the 2019 Georgia Energy Plan. We will gather on Thursday, May 30th at 7 pm upstairs of the Mellow Mushroom Cartersville (unfortunately not wheelchair accessible). We will provide dinner and refreshments to all who come join us. Alcohol will be available for your own purchase at the restaurant's bar. Doors will open at 7:00pm and the community discussion will start around 7:30 pm. This event is free but please RSVP so we can get an accurate count for food. This is an opportunity for Northwest Georgia and Northwest Metro Atlanta residents and concerned community members to come together to discuss how we can move Georgia forward on implementing clean affordable energy and good green jobs across our communities. In addition to discussing clean energy, our local riverkeeper the Coosa River Basin Initiative will be presenting on the millions of tons of coal ash at nearby Plant Bowen & Plant Hammond that are leaking toxic chemicals and metals into our waterways. We will also discuss local efforts to making inclusive energy efficiency financing available within Cobb EMC.

    NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY WITH LARRY WINSLETT. Larry is an award winning nature photographer who has chronicled the natural world in many parts of the United States and Canada. He has specialized in the regions’ wildflowers, animals, rivers, and streams and is particularly noted for his work featuring the three major granite outcrops in Georgia—Stone, Panola, and Arabia Mountains. Larry has served as Conservation Chairman of the Georgia Sierra Club twice and is currently its Wildlands and Wildlife Committee Chairman. As a leader in several environmental organizations, Larry has effectively used his photography in support of many major environmental issues, especially on the protection of native biodiversity and habitats. Larry has worked on 2 books on Stone Mountain, and his work can also be seen in numerous other books, including The Reach of Song, the Georgia Poetry Society’s 2010 anthology, and Atlanta’s Stone Mountain, a Multicultural History.     Byron Rushing, Bicycle & Pedestrian Program Manager, Atlanta Regional Commission, will discuss ARC’s strategy to improve walking and bicycling in metro Atlanta and access to public transit; and to build a regional trail network. He will also discuss the upcoming Chattahoochee River Greenway Trail project. We expect to also hear from Cobb County Transportation Director Eric Meyer on the results of the 2018 transit survey.
