What we're about

Check out this video that Thomas Mulready from CoolCleveland.com took at one of our recent swing dance meetups. http://www.coolcleveland.com/video/?vid=TR8... (http://www.coolcleveland.com/video/?vid=TR89QTpPuYY&page=0He)

This group is for people who are interested in doing or learning how to do one of the easiest and most common forms of partnered dancing--Swing dancing! Swing dancing can be anything from Jitterbug to Lindy Hop to Charleston to Balboa and more. Basically, if it was danced to swing or jazz music from the 1920s to the 1950s--it swings! We are open to dancers of all levels! We were all beginners once and we encourage beginners to come and join our group. You do NOT need a partner to attend one of our twice monthly dances, any of our 5 week lessons or our special topic workshops. Although it is not required, most people do rotate partners during our lessons. We encourage rotating partners as it is one of the best ways to learn the lead and follow aspects of partnered dancing. This group is sponsored by the swing dance professionals at Get Hep Swing. Get Hep Swing was founded by Valerie Salstrom in 1998 and she is a multi-year National and International Swing dance champion in many swing dance forms. Please see complete details at www.GetHepSwing.com

Fundamentals of Solo Vernacular Jazz (Swing Dance) w/ strict safety measures

Broadview Heights Recreation Department

$90.00

Fundamentals of solo Jazz from Tuesday, October 6th until Tuesday, November 3rd from 7-7:50 pm. Arrive at 6:50 pm. Get Hep Swing is offering a fundamentals of vintage solo jazz class where multiple vintage line and group dances will be taught under strict safety measures by Get Hep Swing owner, Valerie Salstrom. The detailed instruction in these classes will be given at a slow and easy pace and we will repeat new moves and sections multiple times before moving on in the choreography. As a group, we will decide what the exact pacing of each class will be. The routines in the fundamentals classes are perfect for beginner dancers or beginner solo dancers. The routines are likely to have predictable patterns, repeating sections, and are not very long. You may want to take notes in this class so that you are able to practice outside of class time. I will show you a few ways to take notes so that you can come up with something that fits your personality, learning, and memory style. This session will include a brief warm-up that will introduce and solidify swing movements, rhythms, posture, footwork, and concepts that will greatly improve your ability to both swing dance solo and within a partnership. This session's routines will include the Shim Sham, Mama's Stew, and maybe one more routine. The songs used will be of a slower tempo so that everyone can stay as sweat-free as possible and to keep everyone breathing normally. Everyone will have access to the songs used in this class. Each class is limited to 8 students so that we may dedicate an area of 10-12 feet in circumference for each student. Everyone must arrive 10 minutes before class (6:50) for a verbal health screening, no-touch temperature check, hand sanitization, and to sign an acknowledgment of risk and hold harmless agreement. Please bring your own name tag and pen each week. They will not be provided. If you arrive after the class has begun and miss the health screening you may dance in the hallway outside the classroom after you have signed the hold harmless agreement and so long as you are properly masked and 10 feet away from any students inside the classroom. Masks must be worn for the duration of the class and while you are inside the Broadview Heights Rec Center. Bring an extra facemask as wet ones do not work. No food or beverages allowed in the classroom. We will have an assigned "seating chart" for this class. Students must stay in their assigned dance space location for the duration of the 5-week session. Please contact me to let me know if you need a spot closer to me for any reason. First come, first serve. Please contact me at [masked] before 5 pm on Monday, October 5th. Please see the attached seating chart for specific details on the room and dance spaces for each student. Fees: Member $80, Resident $85, Non-Resident $90 Pre-registration by 5 pm on Monday, October 5th is required.
