GetHiking! at Merchants Millpond State Park - Round 2

  • Merchants Millpond State Park

176 Millpond Road, Gatesville, NC (map)

    36.437138 -76.701385

  • We enjoyed it so much last time, lets do it again.
People that were not able to make it the first time, hopefully you can attend this hike. If you were lucky enough to attend before, please let others respond first, so they can enjoy this as well. Everyone is still welcome of course. This is a 6-mile loop on Lassiter Trail, which penetrates the dense woods in this adjunct to the Great Dismal Swamp. Mostly flat trail makes this 6-miler seem shorter than it is. Average hike time is 2.5 hours. Water is only available to the start and end of hike, please bring own bottles/bladder.
Merchants Millpond State Park is known for its namesake 760-acre millpond, long-since abandoned for power generation and taken over by impressive bald cypress and tupelo. The pond makes for great paddling which is what the park is known for.

Stay after the hike and replenish with some snacks and great conversation. Paddling the Millpond is also a great time. Canoe/kayak rentals are available at a hourly rate.
Will keep you updated on the mosquito report, hoping they will all be gone by December.

Looking forward to our hike tomorrow! Just wanted to say I'm bringing my dog and will meet you at the park at 9 instead of in the GOPC parking lot. Is there a specific rally point at the park?

Hey Dave, thanks for joining the group. The group number is set at 25, but that is a loose number. We try to keep the group smaller for impact reasons, etc.. Everyone is still welcome.

I definitely want to. I have wanted to do an overnight backcountry hike for a while and this is my chance to go with people who have done it before. It's only that night which is a good start. 😊

Good day everyone, hope you all had a safe and enjoyable holiday last week? Just a recap for the hike this Sunday. People can meet at GOPC if you want to follow me to the State Park. Will be leaving there by 7:30am. It is about a 75 minute drive. You can also meet at the State Park (address above) around 9:00am. Hopefully we can start hiking soon after 9:00. Weather looks slightly chilly in the morning right now. Once we get moving, should warm up nicely. Please remember to layer properly. If you have any questions about layering, please visit us at Great Outdoor Provision Co. and we can answer them. Please bring water bottles/bladder. No water on the trail but is available before we start. You can stay after the hike, for people that want to canoe/kayak the Millpond. It is very enjoyable. Bring your own boat or rentals are available. Any questions, please ask. See you all on Sunday.

I will lead a caravan from the Great Outdoor Provision Co. parking lot, for people that want to meet early and leave about 7:30am. If people want to meet at the visit center for the State Park about 9:00 is another option.

I'm new...does anyone carpool from VB?

    November 15

    • Todd S.

Hey Abbey, carpooling is a option if someone is on the same time schedule as you. Can ask people that are going if they are willing to carpool. We did do a caravan last time if people want to meet at GOPC and follow me.
