Participation in Johnsonville Christmas Parade

Hi all,

This is the one and only Christmas Parade we (as in what was: Newfoundland Club, but now Giant Breed walking group) have taken part in for quite some years now. It is a very worthwhile and heart warming thing to do, because we have been told many times that our giants are the best part of the Parade, for kids AND their parents. So many children have never really seen such big dogs, let alone being able to pat them.

YES! You read right: the kids can pat the dogs because, instead of huddling in the middle of the street, we walk alongside where all the children are, which gives them an opportunity to pat the dogs.  The delight - and awe - on those little faces will really pull at your heart strings.... and if you're a softie like me, I suggest you wear sunglasses.....

Rosemary Cook, the organiser, would like an estimate of how many dogs she can expect, so, if you are going to take part, please RSVP - ASAP!

I have also asked Rosemary that, if the Small Dogs walking group takes part, we can "merge" and as a result be a HUGE bunch of lovely, well-cared dogs.

Go on, make this small effort, which has such a big impact on how people perceive "dogs".

Thank you,

Netta, Regrettably I will not be attending any further dog walks in NZ. I have been transferred to a job back here in the USA and I left NZ late last month with only a short notice, so I did not have a chance to say "Good-bye" to Maria and you. But I am currently home with my hounds that I have missed sorely. Our little 8-month-old puppy is already 66Kg. That is about 15Kg more than the normal for 8-month-old IW puppies.

A few things re the J'ville Xmas Parade:

    Not long to go now!
Please wear a white T-shirt and blue jeans. Ditto red lead (for your dog - duh!). If not, don't rush out and buy those things!!! I have some spare red leads you can borrow. Also: a box full of "decorations" for the dogs, which I will also bring along. One thing I have to insist on: ONLY ONE DOG PER HANDLER! This for safety reasons, as there will be people who'll bring their dog/s along to watch the Parade, and any mishap would be awful. Haven't heard about the small dogs - never mind - it's the giants the crowd comes to see anyway! There will apparently be police dogs (joining us?). That's nice eh?

Check this site in case of doubtful weather for cancellation. But (bad weather) would be a first since we started our walks, so I expect good weather - and no earthquakes - on the day.

Look forward to seeing you there, and thank you for taking part,
Netta on behalf of Erin and Paul.

To all the new members who have joined Meet-Ups in the last 6 weeks or so: WELCOME! I am sure you and your dogs will enjoy our outings.

If you haven't decided yet on whether you will join in the Christmas Parade, I'd say: do it! Before the parade begins we have some time to just chat, and for you and your dog/s to get to know the other dogs and owners there!

However, before the Christmas Parade, Erin and I will organise another walk (on lead this time) which makes the Wellington Waterfront a very favourite choice for a walk. Will let you all know in plenty of time!
    Have a nice day everyone,

Apropos the J'ville Xmas Parade. It pays to be in Dr. Taylor Tce (by the church) by TEN O'CLOCK as, if you're not there by then, parking gets hard to find. Also, at 10 they close the roads.
Another thing (dumb me!) the Parade starts at 11, and lasts about 3/4 hrs.
I reckon this site plays games with me, or else I AM dumb.
Perhaps I should simply take up crochet instead of organising people to do things together......
