    Happy New Year! (it's still ok to say that right?) Gibraltar Startup Community is back with the first meetup of 2017. As we hold on to our New Year's resolutions we will be discussing the prospects and challenges in 2017. We look forward to seeing you at our first meetup in the new year! Speakers • Massimo Gibilaro (https://www.linkedin.com/in/massimogibilaro) is a senior digital product manager with extensive experience in building and launching successful websites and applications. He is a guru at mobile development and optimised experiences. Lucky for us Gala Coral has brought him to Gibraltar. Massimo will talk about how to capture your user's attention in 2017. • Chris Cousins, director at Gibraltar-based Socium Networks (http://sociumnetworks.com/), is an experienced founder who understands the perils of entrepreneurship. There will be new opportunities in 2017 as well as challenges. Chris will highlight the top 5 dangers that you should look out for as an entrepreneur.     There are a lot of hot new technologies at the moment from AR, VR, AI, to IoT. All of them offer opportunities for startups. One technology that has not been in the limelight as much and is often misunderstood is blockchain. It forms the backbone of virtual currencies such as Bitcoin. However, blockchain is a lot more than a technology for virtual currency or Fintech. What are the commercial possibilities with blockchain? What are decentralised applications (Dapps) and smart contracts? Come and find out as our guest speaker sheds more light on blockchain and his own experience with launching his company in this domain! Speakers • Alex Biet, founder of FutureDay.co, will share the progress made so far by his online startup incubator and the first batch of founders who completed the first programme session. He has worked in Silicon Valley with companies such as UberMedia, an Idealab company. His latest venture is a Bitcon ETI in partnership with the Gibraltar Stock Exchange. Ransu will share with us the endless possibilities with blockchain and why it is the most exciting development since the internet itself.     After our short summer break, Gibraltar Startup Community is back with our first monthly meetup of the[masked] term. As the heat of the summer has drawn, we roll back to our routines and set new goals. With the dust of the brexit referendum settling we will be discussing the current and future state of affairs for startups in Gibraltar, cloud computing and an open-space session. Counting the weeks with less fingers than one hand holds - we'll see you there! Speakers • The Hon. Neil Costa, Minister for Business and Employment, will highlight HM Government of Gibraltar's plan for startups. • Stephen Bailey is an IT Professional with over 16 years experience of developing large scale software systems. He has worked in a variety of business sectors taking on roles such as software developer, consultant, contractor and management. Over the last few years Stephen has been involved as the co-founder of a SaaS based tech startup in the UK.
