Intro to Sass

Sass is the new way to wrangle your CSS. It builds upon the CSS you already know how to do while allowing you to manage your CSS in a way that is maintainable and modular--gone are they days of a single CSS document with thousands of lines. Separate your CSS in a way that allows you to produce rapidly.

In this course, we will cover nesting, imports, comments and variables with Sass. We will learn how we can use these techniques and practices to create a mixin, extend to other classes, manipulate colors and math, and how to use Sass to build a simple responsive website.

Prerequisites:

• A basic understanding of HTML

• A basic understanding of CSS (preferred, but not needed)

• If you have any questions about these prerequisites, feel free to comment below or get in touch via email ([masked])

About the teacher:

Javier Rios has a passion for design; as a User interface Designer and Engineer, he advocates responsive web practices and community education. Building and designing for 7+ years, Javier has taught HTML, CSS and Sass concepts through a broad spectrum of organizations, meet-up groups and educational institutions. Javier is a Sass evangelist and launched Bmore Sass (now Bmore Front-end Development), an educational meet-up for Baltimore’s tech community, earlier this year.

Please bring/install the following on your computer prior to class:

• Your laptop and charger. NOTE: A netbook or tablet is NOT a substitute. If you need a laptop to be provided, please let us know in advance of this class.

• A code editor installed. (We recommend SublimeText 2 for Windows or Mac or Notepad++ for Windows.  Both are free.)

• Either Codekit (15 day trial) for Mac or Scout for Windows.

• A modern browser with either Chrome and the "Web Developer" extension or Firefox and Firebug installed.

Space for this class is being generously provided by our sponsor, Emerging Technology Center.

Refund policy: Your payment guarantees your seat in the course. If something changes after registration and you cannot attend the course, your seat is yours to sell or give to someone else -- just please let us know who! As a rule we don't offer refunds or credits; instead your class fee will go toward our chapter fund which we will use to establish a scholarship fund going forward. That said, please do reach out and let us know if you have extenuating circumstances.

ACK! I can't go either. SO bummed. Kara's seat is first but mine is for sale as well.

PS you really should offer refunds. :(

The refund policy is primarily to avoid last minute cancellations so that we aren't wasting time and money (ours, the venues donating their time/space to us, or the teachers'/TAs') on events where the students decide not to come last minute and just get a refund instead. We need to be able to have a fairly reliable/accurate count. If there is some kind of hardship, which we know happens on occasion, you can always email us and let us know what's going on and we can work something out. The change Angelique mentioned still won't offer refunds through meetup directly, but it's an internal policy within GDI that will allow us to occasionally manually refund class fees for extenuating circumstances. This actually is in place now, but our policy is still primarily no-refunds for the above reasons.

It's OK. I understand. It's just a bummer to not be able to go AND lose the $. :(
