Intro to Responsive Web Design

Websites are no longer viewed on computer screens alone. These days, people access content on smartphones, tablets to desktop.

Designing responsively allows for website content be seen from any device. In this class, you'll learn how to build a responsive website. We'll cover best practices, common design patterns, and code.

Please note:
1. This class is a 4-part series spanning four weeks. Your payment covers the whole series. (November 19th, November 26th, December 3rd, December 10th)
2. All attendees should have intermediate HTML & CSS knowledge, and should have a laptop with HTML editing software installed. All the exercises on Codecademy's Web Fundamentals course should be familiar material. Please go through all the exercises before the first class.

About The Instructor
The course will be taught by Amanda Cheung, a designer and developer at DockYard. Teaching Assistants will be Allen Tseng, Meg Broughton and Sam McTaggart.

About The Location
Dockyard is located close to Park St Station and Downtown Crossing Station. When you enter, go to the second floor and take a left. There will be a sign to direct you in to the room.

Just updated the slides to include one way to do the example project. Here is the link: http://acacheung.com/gdi/rwd/index4.html#slide-5

Feel free to ask any questions about the way I did this. You can ask questions here or email me at [masked] or come to the next OpenHack, which is this coming Thursday!

Red line train madness, stalled on tracks for around 15 mins now. Whispers about having to switch trains at JFK. Disabled train. Timely attendance in question.

I will not be able to attend class tonight. I wanted to say 'thanks!' to Amanda and all the assistants who have helped me! I've learned a lot. Also, and if there is any chance - could you please send me a link to the correct code with the "club sandwich" javascript? I was going to work on that part tonight. A link to tonight's slides would be great to have too.

    Thanks guys!

How's everybody feeling? Does anyone need help with something before the final class?

    December 9, 2013

I've wanted to attend this http://www.bostongirlgeeks.com/
tonight but the schedule conflicts. Woul;d it be too much of an interruption if I arrived later on in the lesson, or should I skip this week entirely and catch up. Is there a hackathon going on this Thursday, perhaps?

    December 3, 2013

    • Amanda C.

There's no openhack this Thurs and the girl geek happy hour looks fun! If this helps, today we'll be going over mobile navs and implementing one on our sites. You do either, but it will definitely not be too much of an interruption if you arrived later on in the lesson.

Is there a way to review or go over what we did last Tuesday? I'd like to catch up if possible. Thanks!

I may try to come early as well. My page is a mess. The traffic is bad from Salem, MA and took me 1.5 hours last week. I'm going to try a new route. Wish me luck.

Good luck! I'll be available for anyone who wants extra help this week and next week.

I'm fighting a stomach bug, so I won't be able to make it to class tonight. It's apparently going around, so everyone be diligent if you're traveling. Have a good class, and Happy Thanksgiving!

    • Annette A.

Sorry to hear, Sylvia. Hope you feel better in time for Thanksgiving. We'll see you next week!

If anyone is free tomorrow night and wants to work on front end stuff, maybe your own projects or get a further understanding of the exercises we did in class, there is an Openhack at DockYard (you can sign up here: http://guestlistapp.com/events/212394) I will be there for the first half of the night. Come by and chat! It'll be a great opportunity to meet and be a part of the local tech community :)

    Hi Amanda. I'm excited too!

My job primarily is to create HTML emails (which are essentially web pages with inline styling) and I have been tasked with making them responsive. This opens up a whole new world of compatibility and testing issues as I am not just testing in browsers and devices, but in different email clients as well.

Will we be covering anything specific to responsive email design?

    Thanks!
    Tracy

Running a little behind. Might be 10 minutes late.

Hi Tracy! We won't be specifically practicing HTML emails, but the concepts will carry through. If you run into any problems though, we can do our best to help you.
