Introduction to Programming Concepts (for True Beginners!)

Note: This will truly be an introductory class. If you’ve taken GDI’s Intro to Javascript or Intro to Python classes and successfully completed the exercises, this workshop is not for you. If you’re a programmer by profession, this workshop is not for you.

Have you ever taken a programming class and given up because the concepts were too hard to grasp or all the examples used math formulas and your walls went up? Have you then decided to try again with a different language-- only to discover the same thing? Or have you stayed away from programming all together, because you’re worried that’s what will happen? If you answered “Yes!” to even one of those questions, this class is for you!

In this workshop, we’ll explore some of the most basic and universal programming concepts-- without writing a line of code or introducing any programming languages. Instead, we’ll use everyday activities and real-life examples to demonstrate common  structure such as If/Then/Else statements and different kinds of loops. We’ll also try to take the mystery out of variables and why computers are so picky.

The workshop will be co-taught by Jen Skiendzielewski, Teri Charles, & Nick Lang.

Simple Energy's new awesome space
1215 Spruce Street
3rd floor
Boulder, CO 80301

There are several parking lots throughout downtown Boulder. The parking structure at Spruce & Broadway is the closest to the Simple Energy office.

Laptop optional-- Bring one if you want to follow along with the presentation.

We will be offering flexible study groups the week following all classes. The study sessions are a great opportunity to get your questions answered after class, or get clarity on concepts. Teachers & TAs from class will be available to assist with any questions. Study sessions are announced closer to the class date as space becomes available.

We're here to help! If you have additional questions or would like to talk further before signing up for a class, please contact Cara Jo Miller ([masked]) or Kate Bierbaum ([masked]).

Intro to the Command Line, Intro to HTML/CSS or Intermediate HTML/CSS. Dates to follow.

This is a donation based workshop; all money goes back to the chapter to for scholarships & to host more workshops and events!

This class is generously hosted by Simple Energy. Simple Energy offers space for all GDI members to use in their office during business hours! Just stop by the office any time, ring the bell, say you're with GDI and you have access to the office space for the day! Thanks to Simple Energy for providing productivity and coffee to all GDI members. <3

NOTE: If we have less than 5 people signed up for this class up to a week before the starting date, it will be postponed for a later date. We are unable to offer monetary refunds for classes and workshops. If you are unable to attend, we will issue a credit towards the next class of the same value.

I'm unfortunately getting held up at work tonight. Please post the details if there end up being post-study groups! I'd love to go and meet other women and keep learning!

Hi :) I'm new, but definitely interested. Does the waitlist mean there's no more space for this class? Will there be other intro classes soon?

    1 · April 17, 2014

    • Kate B.

Hi Erin! The space we host classes does have a limited amount of space, so we can't open up any more spots. However, we'll send out a reminder for people to update their RSVPs & usually a few people will update to 'no'. I'd plan on attending =] (And we'll host another intro class again soon!)
