  • Groupon

This class is a four-week series meeting from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesdays April 23, April 30, May 7, and May 14.

Have you experimented with basic HTML/CSS, but want to take the next step in learning how to make an interesting, modern website? Already have your own site and want to have more control over it?

Do you feel giddy at the prospect of learning responsive design and new HTML5 and CSS3 elements?

Then this class is for you.

This intermediate program will cover topics related to fonts, compatibility, responsive design, and the cool, new capabilities of HTML5 and CSS3.

Note: You are not required to take our introductory workshop before taking this one, but it is recommended if you are new to HTML/CSS. If you are unsure if you should take intro or intermediate, consult the topic list below or post a question in the comments.

A limited number of scholarships are available for those with a financial hardship. To apply, click here. Do not RSVP for the event. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is April 9. Scholarship applicants will be notified shortly after the deadline. Class capacity does not impact scholarship students.

Cost: $90

Dates:  Wednesday April 23, April 30, May 7, and May 14 from 6-8 p.m.

• Review of CSS basics, including: reset, floating, the box model, and cascading

• HTML form elements

• New semantic HTML5 elements, advantages and disadvantages to HTML5, and the history of HTML5

• CSS3 properties and abilities, including: rounded corners, drop shadows, gradients, opacity, and @font-face

• CSS3 transitions, animations and transformations (!!!!!!)

• New CSS3 selectors and pseudo-selectors

• Microdata and how it relates to SEO and accessibility

• Multimedia, geo-location, and storage

• Responsive design using media queries

• Cross-browser compatibility

If you are unsure if you should take Intro or Intermediate, use the above topic list to help to determine which class is more suited to your skills. A one-day intro class is available on April 12. Another one-day intro class will be scheduled in May.

Instructor: Alan Deitch, awesome guy and Engineering manager at Groupon.

 Host: Groupon

I'm sure there's no need to introduce Groupon to you - you've probably used one of our great deals. What you probably don't know is some of the cool things that we're working on in-house. From our flagship Groupon site down to our new Breadcrumb POS system, Groupon is brimming with opportunity. And with our world class engineering and design teams in Chicago, Palo Alto, and Berlin, we're gearing up to make a new Groupon a reality.

Note: you must provide your first and last name as it appears on your ID when you RSVP for building security.

Hi. I'm curious if after completing this course if there are a handful of companies who partner with you that are willing to consider new employee candidates from your advanced course completion (or other courses).

For those on the waitlist, we've created another Intermediate HTML/CSS for the first weekend in June: http://www.meetup.com/Girl-Develop-It-Chicago-IL/events/177473882/

We usually hold this class once a quarter, so it's likely we'll have it again late summer.

Class adjustment: one of our super fantastic TAs, Alan Deitch, is going to be teaching this class instead of me.
