PHP is the language that powers Facebook, Wikipedia, WordPress, and more--in fact, it is the most common server-side language on the web!

You can use PHP to build interactive, dynamic websites.

We will go over the basics of programming with PHP--variables, functions, loops, and more!

We will also show you how to connect your code to a MySQL database.

By the end of the class you will have a fully functional PHP website.

If you've got a working knowledge of HTML and CSS and have been looking to jump into the world of PHP & MySQL, this class is for you!

CURRICULUM DETAILS:

Introduction to Server Side Languages and PHP
What is a server-side language? How is it different than client-side languages? What is PHP? Why is it so popular? What can it do? Learn the basic structure and syntax of PHP and manipulate variables. Begin using if-else and while loops.

Introduction to MySQL
What is a MySQL database? Why are relational databases important? Who uses them? Why should I? Build a basic database in MySQL and add to it using PHP and HTML forms.

Database Manipulation
Add, edit and delete content in your database. Learn how to manipulate different content types, including text, numbers, dates, and multimedia. Relate data across your database. Develop search functions.

Advanced PHP
Create password protected information. Use PHP to dynamically customize the HTML or CSS in your webpages. Learn popular advanced PHP functions used in the real world.

PREREQUISITES:

Students should be familiar & comfortable with basic HTML & CSS.

NOTE: We are offering scholarships on a limited basis for students with financial need. Applications must be received by Monday, November 28. Scholarship recipients will be notified the Monday before the class.

MINIMUM ENROLLMENT: If fewer than 12 students register for this workshop, GDI Detroit may postpone or cancel it. In that event a refund or class credit will be available to any students who have paid to attend.
