We have so much to celebrate! We're almost to the end of 2016 and this year, we've hosted 96 events, added 920 new members (and counting every day!), and have had over 1500 RSVP's for our events.
So let's celebrate the season together. We'll have food, drinks, music and good company! Come and toast to your accomplishments, and meet your fellow GDI students.
We look forward to celebrating with you!
We'll be hearing a few five-minute talks from various members of our community during the party. Many of our Ignite speakers will be giving their first presentation ever! Here are the speakers and talks we'll enjoy, in alphabetical order:
Sarah Bostwick presenting "Where Are All the Lady Devs?"
Through the stories of four famous women in technology, Anita Borg, Grace Hopper, Megan Smith and Katherine Johnson, I would like to talk about my personal journey to discover the community movement to support women developers at all skill levels both nationally and here in Los Angeles.
Krista Karpan presenting "New Words Added to the Dictionary in 2016"
The title pretty much sums it up. I'll be going over some of the best words added to the Oxford dictionary in 2016 including but not limited to adulting, YOLO, and 'Merica. The talk aims to be entertaining yet informative.
Natalie MacLees presenting "What color is seven?"
A look at the wonderful world of synaesthesia, including what it is, what forms it can take, some famous synaesthetes, and other interesting facts and experiences of the neurological phenomenon.
Jerilyn Phippeny presenting "Tea: The Magic Liqueur"
I'll present on some facts about tea, including its history, properties, and proper brewing.
Serita Robinson presenting "Self Care in the Digital Age"
In the era of comment sections, blogs and twitter storms, unplugging is nearly impossible. Short of locking yourself away in a cabin in the woods for a few days, which isn't a terrible idea, you basically can't actually disconnect and preserve your emotional barrier. How do we find ways to connect meaningfully and respectfully, while still putting self care first?
Michelle Rodriguez presenting "Get a Hobby"
How your hobbies and the things you do for fun can teach you how to be successful in business.
George Wu presenting "Panic Moment When You Lose Your Air While Scuba Diving"
While under 60 ft, I coughed out my regulator that supplied air to me. In that time of panic, I was getting ready to die. A sudden change of mindset allowed me find my regulator and emerge alive back at the surface.
GDI LA Wishlist
If you're moved to contribute to GDI LA during the holiday season, please take a look at our Amazon Wishlist (http://a.co/7AyN0Yp), which has a number of items we can use to get our 2017 leadership team set up for success and items we can use to help our students! There are items at all price levels.
Big thanks to Industrious Los Angeles for hosting our party. Industrious Los Angeles (https://www.industriousoffice.com/) is DTLA's newest premium coworking space. With a focus on hospitality and design, Industrious offers beautiful common spaces, private offices, and an inviting community.
We recommend parking at One Wilshire for a flat rate of $7 after 3pm. The address for the parking structure is 624 Grand Ave and the entrance is where Wilshire ends at Grand. Then it's just a short walk across the street to 600 Wilshire to join us for the party!
You can also park right in 600 Wilshire. The entrance is on Wilshire.
