Philadelphia LadyHacks 2014 will be March 7-8, 2014 at First Round Capital
LadyHacks (http://ladyhacks.org) is Philadelphia’s women only* hackathon with the mission of providing a welcoming space for women to explore civic hacking. Beginners and the tech-curious are especially encouraged to attend, as are experienced technologists who are interested in sharing their knowledge and skills while working on projects that they are passionate about.
What’s a hackathon?
While hacking doesn’t always have a positive meaning, the term hackathon comes from the meaning of creating something that’s less than perfect because it’s done under an intense deadline. At a hackathon participants work on projects that they themselves create, and they do so in a very short time.
Hackathons are an important event in the tech and non-profit communities. The projects created during hackathons often serve as launch pads for on-going projects, participants have the opportunity to learn new skills, or to put newly acquired skills (say, from a GDI lecture or workshop!) to work, and of course, to network.
LadyHacks follows the model of a civic hackathon, which emphasizes creating projects for the greater good. This year’s theme is A of One’s Own, inspired from Virginia Woolf's 1929 essay, A Room of One’s Own. We encourage teams to consider what Room() should return in order to achieve gender equity in STEM, and to build projects aiming to do just that.
LadyHacks is organized and run by team of dedicated volunteers. We do charge a small entry fee of $10 to participants. One hundred percent of this admission fee will be donated to TechGirlz, a non-profit organization that encourages school aged girls to consider careers in technology through classes, workshops and mentorship programs.
