Giving What We Can - Calgary is a Calgary-based group who works to inspire new and effective ways of giving globally. Together, our group will explore and discuss new and effective ways of giving and will inspire others to do the same. We are inspired by the Giving What We Can movement that started in the UK with the aim of fighting global poverty. We too believe that the privileged few in wealthy communities need to do more to help our countless global neighbors besieged by poverty and child mortality. Like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, we also believe in effective altruism - which means giving to effective poverty reduction interventions that are deemed effective as supported by evidence.

We also agree with Margaret Mead who said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” By starting a small community here in Calgary, we would like to connect like-minded individuals, inspire others and see where together we can go. Can we inspire Calgarians to appreciate how much they have? Do Calgarians realize how much can be done with what they can give? How do we give in the most effective way possible? Imagine if everyone gave 10% of their income to the most-effective charities that make the biggest difference. Together we can eliminate extreme poverty within this lifetime. See www.eacalgary.org for more details on our website!
