Coffee meet up (to talk about paintings?) £3 entry

  • The Glasgow art club

    185 Bath Street, Glasgow (map)

    55.864536 -4.262603

  • Find us outside of the art club.
  • Price: GBP3.00 /per person

    Refund policy

  • For the coffee meet up, please bring along something: an image, book, photograph or your own painting and give very brief reasons why you like it.

It could be a painting that is new to you that you haven't done any research for, or one that has been your favourite for a while. State in a sentence or two its salient points.

It's not an opportunity for anyone to show off or, at this initial meeting, speak for any great length of time. (I intend to only give a few sentences myself.)

I propose no more than about 2 minutes. The idea is for us to see what particular art we all like, and it's not really going to be a good meet up, perhaps, if we need to sit in silence while all of us talk individually if there's a high turnout.

Just a gentle reminder to those who cannot manage to kindly change your rsvp please. There's no need to provide an excuse. Unlike all other meets, there's a small charge that will build up and I'd rather not deal with this if there's a number who'll wait till the last minute before saying they cannot manage. Thanks

This has become a very chatty site! I'm so relieved I won't be expected to talk for more than 2 mins on The Day! I'll be bringing something, in a frame, from home. Prepare for a 2 min surprise ... I'm a CV member simply to learn and enjoy. Can't teach anyone a single anything! See you all soon

I'm sure you are being too modest. I'm not sure if this group is about anyone teaching anything- just sharing interests with nice pleasant people- and you have these qualities, and more, in abundance!

Dorothee, if you could change your rsvp please, I'd be grateful. Thank you.

I just did it, I am sorry, I couldn't with my phone from work. :)

The club's email to me: Hi Michael,

The cost for the event will be £63 plus £31.50 for teas and coffees. This can be invoiced if you’d like, and must be paid on the day.

Hi shiz, if any no shows or last min cancellations, I'll ask the club to adjust bill. There's a waiting list, but I increased numbers to give everyone a chance, so no ones on the waiting list. X

Ok Michael, it seems only fair the club adjust their figures accordingly. I hope you don't get any hassle from them over this.

  • Michael

Just for the sake of ease, I was going to order everyone a tea or coffee, after our talk. So that the staff can have everything ready and we will not have to wait and queue. If anyone does NOT want a tea/coffee, (at £1.50) then please let me know asap, thanks.

    Also not a problem.

  • Gregory

Hi Michael, I have no problem with room charge.

    1 · November 19

  • Paula

Hi Michael, £3 room charge is not a deal breaker! Seems very reasonable

    1 · November 19

  • Derek W

    Michael,
£3 per head seems reasonable so I would be happy to pay it. We need a quiet space obviously.

    1 · November 18

  • Michael

Given how busy the group is throughout November, and that a number of people are away from Glasgow, I've opted for Saturday 10th Dec. 2pm. If this isn't convenient, kindly change your rsvp please. I hope we can do something like this in the future for anyone who isn't able to come along. Thanks

    • Alun ap R.

It's fine, £3 is reasonable for letting all us rabble in there. Hope you have recovered.

  • Marjorie

Michael, I've just changed my status as I've realized I unfortunately can't make it that day Anyway, I do think the £3 charge is reasonable.

Hi Michael. Thanks for your email.
Three pounds seems a fair price for
this event. Certainly better than the
    £1600 they said before!! Looking
    forward to it.

Some of us are at the art club on Saturday. I'll speak to staff about dates then. I was thinking of breaking it over two days: Friday and Saturday, perhaps, in December. (If there's a larger group, then it's a longer talk. I don't want to take away the opportunity for members to talk socially.)

This is a great idea, we may discover something unexpected and new!

    • Michael

Indeed. I'm sure we all have different tastes.

    • Alun ap R.

21 people @ 5mins each, 1h 45mins. For this many, it might be an idea to print off more than one copy of the picture you want to talk about, so it can go both ways around the group at the same time.

I missed this one somehow. Shame! I think this is a great idea - so long as its an evening or weekend event.

Weekend, tick. Or evening, tick. Somewhere with a working heater, double tick!

yes I would like to give this a try, depending on the date of course.

hi , sounds like a nice way to spend a winter afternoon. I too would prefer a weekend . will await details

  • Violet

Great idea! I am quite flexible and can manage to fit in with best time and place.

    October 31

  • Alison

This sounds great. I would prefer weekends, as I work full-time. but that does not mean that if this is regular that it cannot accommodate those during the week, too.

    • Michael

Maybe try both: a Saturday and weekday. I thought the Glasgow art club could be the venue but they might be more busy leading up to Christmas. The concert hall coffee shop or kelvingrove might be alternatives.

      1 · October 31

  • Dorothee B.

It is a great idea, I will come if it is on weekend :)

  • Shiz M.

This sounds a fun, social idea. I'm sure everyone has a piece of art that means something to them, regardless of background or taste. It would be really interesting to hear people's stories around this. As some of the group may be aware, my colossal knowledge of art could be easily written on the back of a postage stamp. So I doubt I could bring much in terms of art history or knowledge but I'm happy to share opinions & learn more about this topic.

    3 · October 30

    • Michael

Exactly. I'd like to try and keep it fun, so there's no pressure on research. Art is so objective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

      2 · October 30

  • Alun ap R.

Unless it is during the day in the working week, when I would not be able to come, unfortunately.

    October 30

    • Michael

      A Saturday is first choice.
