I have always wanted to visit Guatemala in Central America as it looks like a fascinating place full of culture. I am looking to see if anyone would like to join me on a 10 day trip there in Jan 2022. Early planning I know but by sorting things early we should get a good deal and I also think the later the trip is planned the more chance covid will be over and we have more chance of it going ahead. Also we can book parts of the trip at different times and spread the costs a bit.

Here is a rough idea of what we can do when we are there:

Day One: Fly from Manchester or other airport if more convienent to Guatemala City. Land in the evening and stay overnight there.

Days Two and Three: Get the bus to Antigua which is an hour away. Set against the pictorial backdrop of three imposing volcanoes the beautiful, old colonial town of Antigua is one of the country’s top tourist destinations. Antigua provides a plethora of impressive sights and activities. Just a simple stroll through the city centre awards views of spectacular architecture, historic churches and prominent landmarks like the Santa Catalina Arch. The heart of the city is Central Park, a large green space with trees, walking paths, monuments and fountains. A must-do is get lost in the city’s huge market with its maze of tropical fruit stalls and flowers. Museums and art galleries showcase Antigua’s history, culture and art, while the Hill of the Cross presents panoramic views of the city.

Days Four and Five: Today we will head to Panajachel, a lakeside town in the southwestern central highlands, which is an hour away by bus. The town sits on the shores of Lake Atitlan, which, with Sierra Madre volcanoes on the other side, dominates the landscape. Atitlan is the deepest lake in Central America. It also makes a good place to explore surrounding native villages around Lake Atitlan, which are accessible by private boat.

Day Six: Today we head to Chichicastenango which is 40 minutes away by bus. This is a good place to immerse yourself in the Mayan culture – almost 100 percent of the town’s population is Mayan K’iche. Therr is a fantastic market on Thursday where you can buy everything from food and colorful women’s blouses to lime stones for making tortillas and traditional carved wooden masks.

Day Seven: We head back to Guatemala City today. There isn't much to do there so I will make sure I book a nice hotel where we can relax and recharge our batteries after a full on few days sight seeing.

Day Eight: Today we will get an internal flight to Flores. Flores is a located on Lake Petén Itzá and connected to land by a causeway. Flores is a great place to visit in Guatemala, filled with colonial, red-roofed buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, a historic church and many hotels and restaurants. Walks through the Old Town offer the sights of beautiful old Spanish churches and colonial buildings. Boat cruises can be taken across Lake Peten to view picturesque scenery and a variety of birds.

Day Nine: Today we will head to the world famous Mayan ruins of Tikal.
Located in the tropical rainforest of the Petén province in northern Guatemala, Tikal was one of the largest cities of the ancient Mayan civilization during its Classic period, which ran from approximately 200 A.D. to 850 A.D.

Day Ten: Today we will fly back to Guatemala city to get our flight back home.

Day Eleven: Land back in the UK
