  • O'Reilly's - Lamington National Park

It would not be pleasant to walk in these conditions.

Bruce McCabe - Ph:[masked]

Please make sure your RSVP is up to date the night before and text the Organiser on the day if you find you can't make it at the last minute.

THE WALK- 18km; approx. 7 hours; Moderate (harder than Easy so a better level of fitness is required)

The drive to O`Reilly`s takes about 30 minutes longer than the one to Binna Burra. Please aim to arrive at 7:45am as this allows for any unforseen delays and we can start on time.

This is a magnificent walk and is even more beautiful following rain as the waterfalls are at their best. The track heads down past large Antarctic beeches, giant Brush Boxes and tree fern-filled gullies. As you descend further, the forest floor emits a deep organic sent and you soon hear the rushing waters of West Canungra Creek deep in the valley below. At Picnic Rock you will encounter the first of about eight creek crossings. If you have hiking poles then please bring them. The blue Lamington spiny crayfish is often seen along the track.

We will then follow Toolona Creek, passing five waterfalls; Elabana Falls being the most famous of these. The track then takes you along an escarpment with great views. We will have lunch at Wanungara Lookout so please bring lunch to eat on the track. From there we will make our way back to O`Reilly`s where we can have a well-deserved coffee and chat.

Bruce likes to start his walks with a period of silence in order to leave the busy world behind and become more attuned to the sounds and spirit of Nature as well as ourselves. He likes to lead a team walk where we keep each other in sight and cooperate  as a team. There will be opportunities to take in the scenery.

WHAT TO BRING: Plenty of water, lunch and snacks, good hiking shoes, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and hiking poles (if you've got them) to help with the creek crossings. Members are also asked to bring a first aid kit on every hike.

We'll pass around the hat again for a $1 contribution to cover our registration on the Meetup website which is around $170 per year. Any additional funds will be donated to the Springbrook SES.

We are not a formal organisation or association and take no responsibility for any mishaps that may occur as a result of our activities. As such, it is up to each individual to make sure they are capable of attempting this track.

The early start is because it is an 18km walk and this way we can take our time, that is we don`t need to worry about getting back in the dark.. Why so far, I assume you mean the 18km distance, I chose this walk because it is a fantastic walk and because I like to offer a variety of walking opportunities . Cheers. Bruce
