CHANGE OF PLANS ... AS EXPECTED! THE TOOLOONA TRACK AT O'REILLY'S IS STILL CLOSED SO I'LL SWITCH THIS OVER TO DAVE'S CREEK CIRCUIT AT BINNA BURRA:
Peter Tobin - 0421 577 422
Yeah I know, I was looking forward to Karen coming too and learning to tootle. K assumed I must have done it many times....once in fact....no matter, it's a piece of cake to make the right turns.
Please make sure your RSVP is up to date the night before and text the Organiser on the day if you find you can't make it at the last minute.
THE HIKE - 12km - approx. 3 hours; Grade - easy:
If you're new to the group or find some of our longer treks a bit off-putting, this one's for you. Dave's Creek Circuit is always a favourite - relatively flat, plenty of changes of scenery, great views and ... best of all ... only 12kms long! There is a nice lookout along the way for a snack / early lunch stop, plus we’ll be back from the walk by about noon for lunch or a snack at the cafe.
To see a fascinating variety of forest and heath, branch off the Border Track 2.3km from the entrance and descend through the head of Nixons Creek Valley out into Daves Creek country. The track passes through several distinctive vegetation types: warm and cool subtropical rainforest along the Border Track; warm temperate rainforest containing many examples of ancient angiosperms such as coachwood Ceratopetalum apetalum in Nixons Creek?s headwaters; and wet sclerophyll forest with giant New England ash Eucalyptus campanulata around Nagarigoon clearing.
Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park - top carpark, in front of teahouse
Lunch or snack at the Lamington Teahouse
From Nerang, take Price Street out of town and follow the signs 26km to Beechmont. Binna Burra is another 10km on from the roundabout (or go to www.whereis.com, using Binna Burra as destination). Allow 50mins from Surfers, 60 mins from Coolangatta or 90 mins from Brisbane
WHAT TO BRING: Plenty of water, lunch and snacks, good walking shoes (hiking boots are not essential for this one) hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. Members are also asked to bring a first aid kit on every hike.
We'll pass around the hat again for a $1 contribution to cover our registration on the Meetup website which is around $170 per year. Any additional funds will be donated to the Springbrook SES.
