SHSNY Great Lectures on DVD - Sam Harris on Free Will

Free Will - Sam Harris doesn't believe in it. Great Lectures on DVD leader/editor Bob Murtha explains that in this lecture, "Harris will elegantly, and with great intellectual ferocity and panache, demonstrate that free will is an inherently flawed and incoherent concept, even in subjective terms. If he is right, he will radically change the way we view ourselves as human beings. And I guess we'l all have to settle for the illusion."

Great Lectures on DVD is FREE. Bring friends.

(But it is a restaurant, so put something on the bar besides your elbow.)

"Free will" touches on everything, but it's an illusion. We're not the conscious author of our own thoughts and actions. "Prior causes!"

I think our system of law and order is predicated on holding individuals responsible for their crimes, which is based upon the assumption of the existence of free will. I see no practical alternative.

Philosophically, though, if you feel the brain is entirely made of matter, the notion of free will disappears. I have heard an atheist argue that since free will doesn't exist, our society should move away from our policy of punishing criminals.
