What we're about
http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/8/7/5/c/event_93814652.jpeg Grandparents often serve as support for their children and grandchildren. Typically, they are a secondary source of shaping young children in the family.
These days, our society has more call for grandparents as primary caregivers if not guardians of their grandchildren. Nationally, 5.8 million children live with their grandparents. See article (http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2010/09/09/since-the-start-of-the-great-recession-more-children-raised-by-grandparents/) for more details.
This group for "grandfamilies" provides support, networking and resources for grandparents http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/3/9/4/event_93805492.jpeg who find themselves parents to their grandchildren.
We are a group of people who found themselves surrounded by grandparents raising grandchildren, in need of connection, support & wondering about resources. Most of us are connected with First Presbyterian Church of Grand Prairie which is sponsoring this, but we have connections with other people, churches & organizations as well. We have also discovered the wealth of resources at the state & local level to help us, as some of us have taken this journey already.
This is a non-sectarian group offering regular gatherings that will build a supportive community among us locally. We will provide childcare during our events and sometimes go out together with our children. We also hope to connect people with helpful community resources, for legal, financial and emotional support in special crises. So whether you are a part-time or full-time parent to your grandkids, we hope this group will be something that benefits you.
We meet once a month. We live all over the metroplex and drive to Grand Prairie for our meeting. The YMCA provides child care with 2 YMCA volunteer adults. Dinner is provided by First Presbyterian Church of Grand Prairie. This way you don't have to worry about child care or dinner, just come as you are!
