8:00 am: Expected start time from Gateway trailhead
This a very strenuous 13-14 mile counter-clockwise loop to Tom’s Thumb and back. It is expected to take 5 hours or more, and is for experienced hikers in excellent physical condition. Total elevation gain is 3000’.
We start with an easy 1.5 miles to the Bell Pass trail, then a strenuous 2 miles up to Bell Pass. Continuing on the Bell Pass trail 1.3 miles to the Windmill trail and another 1/10 mile on Windmill to a very strenuous 1.4 miles up East End. From the top of East End, we have another 1/2 mile uphill on the Tom’s Thumb trail, then a long downhill back to the Wingate and Gateway Loop trails and then to the trailhead.
