June camping Trip - Lake Michigan at Manistee - Free Soil, MI

Lake Michigan at Manistee Group Campground is located within the Lake Michigan Recreation Area on the shores of Lake Michigan south of Manistee in Free Soil, Michigan. The quiet seclusion of the hardwood forest of the campground is filled with trails for hiking and biking. The forest gives way to a beach at the shores of the Lake and a playground for younger campers.

Manistee County is the best area in the world for natural reproducing steelhead (rainbow trout) and the salmon fishing is superb with over 50 percent of the Michigan Master Angler Salmon caught there every year. The abundant woods and waters will create for you an exciting event 365 days a year. Let Manistee add some unique flavor to whatever outdoor activity you choose and we guarantee you will truly enjoy yourself anytime of the year.

Trip Description:
Because of the travel distance (5 hours from Chicago and 6 hours from the north or west suburbs), this trip is planned for three nights from Thursday, June 13 through Sunday, June 16.

Please note that the group campground sites are considered rustic and do no have shower facilities on-site. There are showers at the nearby family campground.  We may have a group portable shower.  The average highs and lows for this area in mid June are in the mid-70’s during the day, and down to the mid-50’s at night.

Wait List:

This trip has been opened up to 25 people. Please note the Automatic Wait List is NOT available for pre-pay events.  If the event is full, please post your desire to be on the wait list in the "Talk about this meetup".

Link to the Lake Michigan Recreation Area:
http://www.michigan.org/Property/Detail.aspx?p=g10422

Payment:
The cost per person for this event will be $39. Your fee includes:

- Group site fees

- Dinner on Friday and Saturday and breakfasts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday

- Firewood for the weekend

- Miscellaneous supplies and group equipment maintenance

This event is pre-pay for you to be able to RSVP YES. If your plans change and you need to cancel, you must request a refund NO LATER THAN THURSDAY, JUNE  6 AT 10:00 PM to receive a full refund. If you cancel after this time or are a no-show, you will lose your entire payment.

Food Arrangements:
Everyone should bring their own food for all lunches and snacks as well as dinner on Thursday.  Complete details on meals will be sent to the group prior to the event. If you have any meal suggestions, you can email them to me. Although it is not required, if you are planning to bring something to share with the group, you may indicate this in your RSVP to minimize duplication. ALL beverages - alcohol and non-alcohol - is BYOB - this includes juice, water, and coffee!

In an effort to be good to our Earth, we will not be providing paper plates, plastic utensils or napkins. Everyone should bring their own plates, bowls and utensils. We will set up a wash station. Bring your own napkins.

Parking and Michigan State Park Vehicle Permits:
We can have only 5 cars at this group site. Anything over 5 requires additional fees.  I highly suggest carpooling, although there is nearby overflow parking. If you are willing to carpool, please use the "Comment" field in the RSVP and indicate where you are leaving from and how many you can take along in your car. The 5 parking spaces at the site will be reserved for the Organizers who will be hauling food and equipment.

Miscellaneous Reminders:
- Pets are allowed on this camping trip so please indicate in your RSVP if you will be bringing your dog
- Free Soil, MI is a 5 hour drive from Chicago and further from the north and west suburbs
- This is an adult only event. Please no children/teens.

I will be emailing final details about the group site, directions, and breakfast/dinner menu options during the week before the event. In the meantime, please feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Just home from ON and want to thank all of you for the nice weekend. I enjoyed getting to know you. The tent is out drying from the rain that fell overnight. Looking forward to camping with the group in the future.

I'm planning a Manistee river paddle and am looking at what the cost of paying for a livery would be as opposed to doing a car shuttle. Is anyone else interested in doing a river paddle? and would you be willing to pay a little for convenience? The section I'm looking at is supposed to be about a 6hr paddle and very pretty. Also anybody have a preference on the day?

    June 10, 2013

    • Jeudi

Yes. I'm planning to bring my kayak. But I'm up for car shuttle if portage is pricey.

      June 11, 2013

    • john o.

Saturday is fine, didn't really find a porter for private boats, I'll have my trailer though so we can do our own shuttle. And of course we're not limited to one paddle or anything, the outfitters I talked to all said this section of the Manistee is nice.

I can leave Friday morning from Oak Park. I can take 2 people or catch a ride with someone else.

    May 30, 2013

    • yumi

susan - i can't leave fri morning, but planning on leaving the city (lincoln park) around 3p...if that works, we could carpool (and you could even park in my garage space if you come meet me at my place)

      June 10, 2013

    • Susan

Hi Yumi - I don't think that would work for this weekend. I'll see you there.

John - I would be up for a Manistee River paddle. I arrive Friday so my vote is for Saturday.

    June 11, 2013

  • dawnms

I'm leaving friday late morning from Racine WI. My dodge journey can take 3 other passengers plus 2 more bikes. The catch is that I don't have to be back to WI until Wed at the latest. So I plan on staying over in MI Sunday and then heading over to Niagra Falls for Monday night before working my way home on Tuesday. If others have time your more than welcome to join me.

    June 2, 2013

    • dawnms

Yeah it is a bit of driving but I don't have to be back until Wed so my plans are fluid. I put it out there mainly for those interested in carpooling could plan accordingly.

Hey Dawn You might want to head further north and check out Sleeping Bear and then go onto Pictured Rocks in the UP. It would make a great loop.

I have a Jeep Commander which will easily carry 3 or more people and haul a lot of gear if people want to take care of the gas. I'm on the SW of Aurora with off-street parking for 4. I was planning on heading up that Thursday moning.
