This is a fantastic backpacking adventure on the side of the park we do not often visit. After being shuttled from Fontana Dam to the "Tunnel to Nowhere" we start this 35 mile, 2 night, 3 day backpacking adventure. This is a grand visual into the early days of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Anyone interested in this adventure should take time and read a few chapters of "Our Southern Highlands" by Horace Kephart, a fascinating tale of the grounds we will be treading upon.
The campsites along Lakeshore Trail are some of the finest backcountry sites I have stayed in. I anticipate staying the first night at campsite 98 or 76 and the second at 86 or 88. The hike will average 11-12 miles per day and I consider it a moderate to difficult trek.
There is a small fee for the shuttle which is way better than shuttling are own vehicles.
In order to join this trek you must email the event organizer.
The Backcountry fee for this hike is $8, and must be paid to Event organizer morning of the hike.
