Over the next few weeks, we will cover several different aspects of theme design with WordPress. To kick this process off, this week we will cover wordpress theme design fundamentals using Artisteer software (note Artisteer is one of our group sponsors) to teach everyone that attends how to design a WordPress theme with Artisteer. We are going to initially use Artisteer as it will generate code behind the theme that will be relatively the same for everyone in the class using the software. This will allow us in future classes to expand into additional topics that will include
- Page Template design for WordPress
- Designing Multiple sidebars in WordPress (ergo more than 2 and placed in multiple areas of a theme)
- Conditional formatting in themes
- WordPress theme design for CMS
- WordPress Magazine theme design
As we go into deeper topics we will also explore the use of ThemeDreamer a Dreamweaver addon, and later converting Photoshop designs into wordpress themes. Goal
By the end of this 90 minute class, attendees will have created at least one WordPress theme themselves. Is this class for you?
If you have ever designed a wordpress theme from scratch successfully or if you have ever designed a wordpress theme with Artisteer before, then this fundamentals class might not benefit you. Hopefully this class will help all others rapidly get up to speed so that in future classes we can all proceed together. I have taught this class at events and conferences around the country. You need not purchase the Artisteer software to take this class, however we will be using this software for the class. A free trial of version 2.3 is available from our sponsor Artisteer. I personally initiate 95% of my own themes using Artisteer. I customize my themes typically using DreamThemer, Dreamweaver, fireworks, photoshop and my own design and coding skills. This class will be easy for any attendee regardless of whether they have any coding or design experience or education. Familiarity with WordPress and installing/uploading and previewing/activating
wordpress themes will be necessary. A screencast video of this event will be available online after wards. To achieve the maximum benefits of this meetup, we expect you to
- bring your own laptop (wifi is provided free).
- have access to your own wordpress site or test site or let the organizer know ahead of time so that he can make a test site temporarily available for you for this training session

If you are interested in personal training either at Lightbulb or at your own office or location, these services are available from Brett Bumeter of Softduit Media at a rate of $35 per hour, minimum 4 hours of training per session. The mentored meetup training sessions are designed to be structured for groups and significantly reduce the individual cost and where possible be provided for free. But in some cases if you require a specific type of training according to your own priorities or schedule On Site training may be a better more timely fit. Would You Like to Mentor a Session Yourself?
If you would like to suggest an Idea for one of our mentored meetup sessions, and you have the experience and expertise to teach that session, be sure to mention that in your Idea suggestion through Meetup.com. :)
