Greenhouse/Construction Shelter Build

  • Dec 14, 2013 · 10:00 AM

This Saturday, we will start work at ten (after tea and coffee!) and finish building the ribs for the bow-top greenhouse, which we can then stand up the following weekend.

Message Sage for the location if you need it, and phone number to call for directions or anything.

Well, i've felt the need to write something here about Saturday's effort. We did not get the greenhouse up. I learned a lot about how to be better prepared next time. I thank with much appreciation everyone who came out and joined in the effort. I hope it was good for you, even though we didn't accomplish the goal. We got together and learned a lot of things, and began to form a team.

I had not been able to spend enough time preparing for the day. I should have organized more drills for the day, and enough bits for screws. I should have gotten the correct metal strapping for joining the ribs to the ridge beam. I should have planned to build two 12' greenhouses and join them, rather than the one 24' one, which was just too heavy for really handling it with our ten people. I should have also brought my ladder. All of these things i could have done if i had been free and clear in the rest of my life. I'm still taking time to think about it all, and what to do next. Discussion welcome.

Happy New Year! I just wanted to say thanks again for the opportunity to help out on this Tiny House project. The greenhouse was/is challenging but I learned a lot. Since I've been on vacation in Ohio, I've repaired the hinges on our garage door and made major furniture repairs. The only reason I had the confidence (and power drill skill) to even consider these projects is because of Greenhouse Day. So thanks again to each of you for sharing your time and experience!

Angela, thank you for saying so. It makes me happy to know you got something from the day. I hope you'll come again! Erica, thanks for your kind words, too!

Ugh....it's 4am and I've been up all night with a cough / sore throat. I think I'm out for tomorrow. =[. I'm sorry to have to miss, especially as I was pushing for keeping the Saturday time! Hope everything goes well.

This may seem crazy, but i'm thinking of seeing if we can do this tomorrow (Friday) instead of Saturday -- perhaps both days, but it depends on the weather. It gets a bit hard to schedule things in advance in the Winter in New England, but i'm thinking of taking off of my regular work tomorrow and getting this thing underway... thoughts? Who could make it and who could not?

Alright, people are signed up already and it look like the snow may not start until later on Saturday, so let's keep it on Saturday ...

I might have to work with my brother at my mothers house. If not I would like to meetup and help.

Sounds good, Jeff, and your bandsaw mill sounds useful too ... not for right now, but at some point ... i have access to lots of tree parts... how is tomorrow (Friday) for your schedule?)

We should keep an eye on the forecast. We're supposed to get a bunch of snow over the weekend! I'm happy to work amidst the elements, but safety is a worthy virtue as well.

Yes, you're right ... if it's snowing i'd rather be able to stay home and enjoy it.

Here is the idea of the shelter we're building, to build the tiny house in... except ours is much smaller than the one shown here: http://www.ramoak.com/yankee30/82/progress
