Lightroom 4/5 Develop Module Training - Part 2 of 2

  • Nov 9, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Please be sure to click on "LEARN MORE" below and completely read all the information, as there are many details associated with this Meetup.

Seminar notes are available for you to download for free and bring to the seminar - see below for how to access them.

NOTE: This is a continuation of Part 1 of this Seminar. Part 2 will only be worthwhile for those who have attended Part 1 of this seminar.

WHAT: FREE seminars on the Lightroom 4/5 Develop Module. The Develop Module is where all the action is in Lightroom, so these promise to be fun and informative. These sessions take an in-depth look at the Lightroom Develop Module, and are structured and timed such that both those experienced in Lightroom and those new to it will find the sessions valuable.

This seminar is the second of two parts, the first part being held on the preceeding Saturday. Sorry but I can't tell you exactly where (what topics) we will end the first session with and begin the second session with as this will be somewhat a function of the pace of the class and questions discussed.

WHEN: Saturday, November 9, 2013. Starts at 10 am, ends at 5 pm.

WHERE: Fernald Preserve, Visitors Center, 7400 Wiley Road, Harrison, OH 45303, (513) 648-4899. Please Google it, as in the past several people have gotten lost getting there.

PREREQUISITES / INTENDED AUDIENCE

This training seminar is intended for people who can bring a laptop loaded with Lightroom 4 or 5 to the session. (Please update your copy of Lightroom 4 or 5 to the latest update, as it will be difficult to follow along with earlier updates). Lightroom 3 is substantially different than Lightroom 4/5 - so those with Lightroom 3 will NOT be able to follow the work.

This seminar is intended for all with Lightroom 4 or 5 loaded onto their laptop, from the neophyte to the experienced pro in Lightroom. BUT you need to understand and be able to import images into Lightroom - we can't take the time to show you how to do that.

LUNCH

We will be taking a one hour lunch break. As there are no restaurants in the immediate vicinity, I suggest you pack a box lunch and bring something to drink. I don't want people straggling in late at the class restart after lunch and disrupting the rest of us.  Bring something to drink, as Fernald does not have a soda machine. They do have a refrigerator to keep things cold and a drinking water fountain.

SEMINAR NOTES

Since this seminar is free we cannot provide class notes at the meeting - as this would cost hundreds of dollars. The venues do not allow us to charge for meetings held there or to exchange money on their facilities (including the parking lot).

It is highly recommended that the seminar participants print out and bring their own class notes to the seminar.

(Note that to be able to access these documents you must be logged into Meetup with your Meetup password.)

Those class notes are available from the links below:

If you cannot directly open the above links - although the above links have been tested on both Windows and Mac computers using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari - some people with some browser settings have reported not being able to directly open these files from within their browsers. As you can understand we do not have the time to help every person troubleshoot their browser settings, as there are almost an infinite number of issues that can cause this problem.

If you can't open the links given above directly by clicking on them, do the following. On the Meetup home page, directly under the words "Greater Cincinnati Photographers Club" is a menu bar. On the far right of that menu bar is "More." Pull "More" down to "Files." Under "Files" you will see these documents.

Right click on the files desired and save them to your desktop or wherever. Then open them. They are Adobe Acrobat PDF files that you should be able to open in any PDF reader.

IMAGES

I will be doing my demonstrations of the features of Lightroom using my own images. I will in the near future download those images to a DropBox folder. If you would like to follow along during the presentation using the same images that I will be using, please download them and import them into Lightroom on your computer. (We will not have sufficient time in the class for you to install these images on your computer.) Alternately you can follow along using images on your laptop.

PRESENTATION STYLE

I will start out this training seminar with a Power Point presentation, to get everyone up to speed and familiar with the basics concepts of the Lightroom 4/5 Develop Module.

We will then transition to actual work in Lightroom 4/5. Each participant will be editing images on their laptop using their copy of Lightroom 4/5.

PREWORK

No prework is required. However, if you would like - take a look at the Lightroom Develop Module Power Point as far as you care to read into it to get a sense for what we will be doing.

SOME DETAILS

The room will be set up with tables and chairs.

I will bring along a number of power strips and extension cords but I cannot guarantee I will have enough for everyone. The class will last too long to operate your laptop on battery power. So I suggest you bring along some type of extension cord and/or plug strip to supplement what I will bring. Please label them with your name so that it can find its way back to you.

Cameras are NOT required for this seminar.

NO-SHOW POLICY

Let me be blunt. No-shows are NOT ACCEPTABLE to me.

I have spent a lot of time and effort preparing this seminar. Anywhere else this type of training would be charged for, and we are offering this to you for free. Please treat your attendance as you would with any event that you pay for.

If for some reason you cannot attend please change your RSVP so someone else can attend. And please don't change your RSVP the day before the seminar (I do understand emergencies) as this does not give others sufficient time to change their plans.

I take attendance. If you are a no-show you will not be welcome at any of my future events. You can obtain a "get out of jail" card and will be back in my good graces by simply taking me out to lunch and paying for my lunch. I think that is more than fair :-)

Jim, I was quite intimidated by the whole software processing end of photography. I came into your two Lightroom classes hopeful and you really delivered. The greatest gift I left with was an anticipation of "playing" with Lightroom vs my original intimidation. Again, you knocked it out of the ballpark. Many thanks, Jim.

Jim, I've been using Lightroom for over a year, yet I learned so much in your class. It was so well organized, and thorough. And your teaching style is so easy. Came away very inspired to try all the new things I learned from you. I'll be watching for more of your classes in the future. GREAT JOB!! Thank you

Jim, I learned a lot these past two weekends. I have applied a number of the steps you recommended to my latest photos and there is a noticeable improvement in my post processing. Thanks so much! Looking forward to the Lightroom 5 seminar!

Again, Jim is very prepared and a great instructor. I gained a wealth of information and looking forward to using this new knowledge to take my photos to a higher level. Thank you Jim. You are so generous with your time and I know all of your students appreciate what you are doing for us.

I had a good base of learning for LR as I own both a Scott Kelby book as well as the Martin Evening book but learning from a book and learning from an instructor are two different things. Jim really helped fill in the gaps and gave me more confidence to play around with the different panels as well as the adjustment brush. Thanks Jim for your time and sharing your expertise. You are highly appreciated!

Jim "hit the ball (cricket ball) out of the field once again! I was using many of the tools shown, but had not delvbed into the options within the tools much (i.e. graduated filter). I look forward to LR5 offering.

Thanks again Jim for all the hard work you put into this.

I just now saw that this is only worthwhile if you've made it to part 1, which I missed. So I'm opening up my spot for somebody else. I've been playing with Lightroom 5 on my own, learning on the fly as I go. I hope there will be a repeat of this series in the near future.

    November 4, 2013

I'd be willing to drive to go to it - I'm north of Cincinnati, but really want to get a handle on this software.

I didn't make part 1, so I think I should leave it open for someone else.

Jim, I'm sorry I can't make it to part two of your seminar. I'll be out of state. I am really looking forward to part one, and I hope someone else can fill my part 2 space.

When downloading the images from my DropBox folder, please use the "Download" function, NOT the "Move" or "Delete" function. Someone is causing images to be deleted from the DropBox folder, requiring me to reimport them.

Although I will be posting this notice for both dates for the Lightroom seminars, there is only one set of images. We will be using the same images for both days.

Sorry but I will not be able to help people with how to use DropBox or how to import images into Lightroom. I simply don't have the time to provide that level of individual support. If you are having problems with either using DropBox or importing images into Lightroom I suggest you talk to a friend who is knowledgable in these areas. DropBox has some information on how to download and use their application on their web site.

I look forward to seeing you at the event!

    Jim

To send me an email you don't need my email address, just click on my name above in blue. Then on the new page that comes up, click on "Send email" which shows up in blue immediately under my name. You can use this method to send emails to anyone in your Meetup groups, while still protecting their email address.

If you would like to have the images I will be using in the Lightroom seminars, please send me your email address.

I will then send you an email with a link to the images in DropBox. You may then want to import the images into Lightroom. (If you would rather work on your own images that is fine by me).

Make sure to check your junk mail / spam folder, in case the email with this DropBox information goes there.

I would like to have two people volunteer to string extension cords out before the seminar begins and take them down after the seminar ends. (You can volunteer for one or both times). If you can help me out for set-up please arrive at 9:15 am. If you can help with take-down please plan to stay 30 minutes after the end of the seminar. Thanks!

And please don't forget to bring an extension cord and/or a plug strip along. We will try to have adequate power connection points for everyone, but we can't guarantee it - so to be on the safe side bring your own along. If its just a 6-foor cord that will help!

    Jim,

I was able to get a spot in part 2 but not in part 1. Should I release my spot so that someone who took part 1 can have it? Thanks,
    Rob

Rob: Keep the spot in Part 2. I have no idea how many people might cancel out of Part 1 - so you might get a spot there later. I sympathize with how difficult this is - I think if we were able to charge and count on people showing up it might be easier.
