For the past seven years, the Metropolitan Opera in New York City has been broadcasting a number of performances live to movie theaters across the country. The broadcast series, called "Live in HD", is now in its seventh season and has been very popular with opera goers worldwide. Metropolitan Opera productions are typically first rate (their annual budget is in the hundreds of millions of dollars), and they attract the best singers from around the world.

On Saturday, February 23rd, the Metropolitan Opera will be broadcasting its brand new production of Rigoletto, produced by Michael Mayer. Mr. Mayer's production is rather odd--it's set in 1960s Las Vegas, rather than 16th century Italy. Here's what the New York Times had to say about this production:

The web page for the production includes a short video from a dress rehearsal of one of the arias (and I'm pretty sure the microphone that Mr. Beczala's holding is fake):

For those of us on the west coast, the USC School of Cinematic Arts will be screening this performance at the Norris Cinema Theatre/Frank Sinatra Hall at 12 pm. What's more, this screening is FREE, though you do have to reserve a ticket beforehand. To make a reservation, go to the web site below, and click on the "Make Reservations" link on the top right.

(Please put "Reserved" in the "Add a comment" area when you RSVP)

Let's meet in front of the theater at 11:30 am. I'll have a meetup sign with me.

I will post parking information and a map shortly. I have never been to this series of events, or to this venue. I welcome comments from those of you who have been to one of these before.
