December Green Drinks - Heartland Tree Alliance

  • Dec 12, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Sustainability Passionists,

For December, we'll be talking about trees.  Not festive trees, but rather the trees we all depend on to share and thrive on our planet.  Helene Miller with the Heartland Tree Alliance (a program of Bridging the Gap) will share her knowledge and passion regarding the planting of trees to help our future as well as the implications of the emerald ash borer beetle.

Over the years, we have not talked enough about trees, so we reserve this month for nothing but.  Please join us for an educational evening with plenty of opportunity for Q&A.

We'll be at Californos Saloon which is accessible from the front or back, but easier from the back off Mill Street.  Parking is easier in the back as well.  This is a new event space, so should be a great venue.  (See at http://www.californos.com/saloon.html)

Hope you can join us.

Thanks All!

Dan Wancura

Patty, you might check the Heartland Tree Alliance site, https://www.bridgingth.... Looks like it covers what we talked about. Of course, you don't get the Q&A interaction, but that is sort of hard to capture...

Thanks. I'm checking about the 2012 drought and possible Arbor or Earth Days events.

Patty, good question, I would suspect that will be covered in Helene's talk, but if not, let's ask her about it.

Sorry I had to end up missing out. I love trees, have planted many.

Dan, yes, local is best, something to ponder, just a method of interaction. Would members link to your account to interact?, do you need membership in gotomeeting to participate? Worth a try, your the subject matter expert, await your guidance. Happy Holidays to everyone.

Randy, good idea. I have a gotomeeting account, but I'm not sure how well our type of meeting would translate over the Internet. We kind of depend on face to face for interaction. Also, Green Drinks is international, so a person would more likely seek out a local meeting than tap into ours. So while I like the idea, I'm not sure how easily we could pull it off.

Could not make the meeting, maybe Green Drinks could get a program like GoMeeting to access for members on the go who would like to participate but cannot attend the physical location. This would allow attendance and could be open to members local, state, or national, heck even international. What are the thoughts of the membership?

Dan, I wish I could make it but have a previous engagement I have to attend. Please keep me posted on next month's event.

Cultivate KC now has a food forest, Dan. Sorry I can't make this meetup but I have a 350KC meeting scheduled.

I'd like to know how bad the 2012 drought has affected Midwestern trees in lawns and forests, and if people are connecting it to climate change.

Dan, If there is time , could Helene discuss if leaves that fall from trees could be used to enhance the soil composition? In her view, what could be the best possible use of mulched leaves? Thanks, Randy

Randy, sounds like a good question. We have Q&A, so be sure to ask about it, I'm kind of curious about that too as leaves are key to my own compost!

Unfortunately I won't be able to attend. I hate to miss it. I am passionate about trees!

Hi Dan. Good to meet you tonight and the KCFC Annual Meeting.
I will not be able to make the meeting this Thursday. Hopefully the one in January.

Oops, see you've already responded to the RSVP. I'll put permaculture food forest on the list and will check in with guest speaker about the topic in advance.

It sure can be. If you come to the meeting, I'll make sure we cover it.

Will part of this discussion involve the creation and management of a Permaculture Food Forest?
