"Green Lifestyle" was chosen for our name because the more we learn, the more areas of our lives we see that are related to our health and the environment. It can't just be limited to green building or using alternative energy sources which in the past have been the dominant areas of green living. Each of us can contribute to the improvement of our health and that of the other people, plants and animals in our community and throughout the world by the daily choices we make. Those aren't just made one time when we build a home. How we choose to live all day, every day is important and affects us and others. Recycling as much as possible instead of just tossing everything in the trash can is something we all can do. Using low-energy appliances and lights and turning them off when not needed not only cuts our electric costs but also our indirect production of green-house gases.
Maybe some day we'll have an electric car that is recharged by solar panels.
Sometimes there just isn't enough money to do all that we'd like to do. And often it costs money to save money and the environment. What doesn't cost more money but a bit more time is composting our organic kitchen leftovers and yard clippings. In a year it rewards us with wonderfully fertile black compost for our plants. Another small thing is asking the cashier at the grocery store to send us off with 1/3 the number of bags they are told to use or even better, taking a cloth shopping bag with us to the store.
These are just some of the things we can do in daily life to tread lighter on the planet. There is much more that we can and hopefully want to do.
For us, trying to live in a green manner is a positive thing and we would like for others to experience that also. Would you like to join with us and see how we can help each other along this path? You have much to contribute - your experiences, your thoughts and ideas. And your enthusiasm.
One thing we especially need to be aware of is that each of us is an individual. We each have our personalities, past experiences, fears, hopes, desires and convictions. No two of us will see everything the same way. There will be diversity. Let's invite diversity. It will enrich the group. Let's welcome and encourage each step a member takes in this great endeavor instead of pointing out and criticizing what isn't being or hasn't been done. Internet groups sometimes get off to a good start only to get into serious online arguments tearing each other apart. Let's make it a point not to do that here. By respecting another's right to have her or his own viewpoint we give what we also would like to receive.
Although Neil is the organizer of this group, we want to promote the active participation of all of the members. Please let us know when you become a member what areas interest you and in which areas you have acquired knowledge and experience that you could share with the group. You are invited to organize meetups. Sub-groups may very well form with more focused interests. For example a few persons especially interested in promoting environmentally friendly yards with low water, fertilizer and pesticide needs and emphasizing native plants. One area that especially interests me (Neil) is green building. I would love to organize a monthly meeting just on that subject. There is so much I've learned and I'd like to pass it on and discuss it with others.
Well, this is a first step. We are anxious to see where this leads. Please join with us.
You can contact the organizer Neil at 239-633-0690.
