Conversational Writing Prompts!
All are welcome! Bring writing tools, your muse, creative spirit and be prepared to write ... Put your internal editor in the closet and write ... Put something down on the paper, in your laptop, in your tablet or in your smart phone ... We don't care what you write with ... Just Write! ... This is not a group for criticism ... We are just about writing and reading what we have just written, although we often do have conversation about the writing throughout the session ... We write in fifteen minute periods ... A prompt is offered for each writing period ... We generally have extra pens and paper tablets if needed ... Enjoy the atmosphere of the Black Dog Cafe. We meet in the expansion area of the Black Dog Cafe, to the right after you enter the cafe. Go through the double doors, even if the doors are closed. We are a community of writers who share the responsibility of facilitating and planning the group. Everyone will have an opportunity to play a role in the developmental growth of the Green Line Writers. Each week we meet with people from around the Twin Cities metro area ... Since we are on the Metro Transit Green Line light rail system and several Metro Transit bus routes (54, 31, 3) we want to encourage everyone to use Non-car Public Transit if possible ... There is NO FREE PARKING in Lowertown, but there are ramps, parking lots and metered street parking throughout Lowertown ... Keep in mind that motorists will be competing with the Farmers Market, CHS Field (Saint Paul Saints) events and a variety of festivals, especially during the Summer months ... Take advantage of the fact that you can get to meetings without a car if you have access to Metro Transit light rail, street bus and Bus Rapid Transit services. The Black Dog Cafe is about two blocks directly east of the Union Depot Light Rail Station. It is at the eastbound end of the Green Line, so if you fall asleep you won't miss your stop! Come on into the Black Dog, order a cup of coffee, a doughnut or a breakfast menu item from the barista. Look for the Green Line Writers Group sign. As was stated before, we will be located in the expansion area of the Black Dog Cafe, to the right as you enter. Go through the double doors, which are often closed on Saturday morning. Just slide the doors to the side or go through the second door a few feet away. You will be welcome.

What we're about

Originally inspired by Midtown Writers, a few members have decided to bring the same approach to the Green Line. It has become nationally known that the Twin Cities is the third most literate metropolitan area in the nation. With that in mind we should appreciate the fact there are a lot of us that maintain great appreciation for the literary arts.

Our focus is to write, by writers, aspiring to be heard. That is our format; yes it is that simple.

We meet weekly each Saturday from 9 am – 11 am. There is no fee and there are no entry requirements. We only ask that you bring a writing utensil or notebook. We stress on handwritten composition as our primary medium, but if you are visually or physically impaired we are prepared to make an exception for you.

Members are allowed to lead each meeting based on the manner in which they register for the role. There is no strict criterion for becoming an event facilitator. We only ask each person to be comfortable speaking and monitoring the flow of the group. The event facilitator is there to make sure the group stays on track. Further details can be provided at our first meeting.

During each meeting, we start with a brief warm up. From that point onward, we write to random prompts. A timeframe is agreed on after the prompt is selected. Then the composition process begins! Once the time finishes those willing to read their freshly written work are given the opportunity to do so in a rotational manner.

That process continues until our first ten minute break which occurs one hour after the first warm up.

The following cannot be stressed enough: WE DON’T CRITIQUE. YOU WRITE, YOU SHARE, AND PASS IT ON. Green Line Writers is not about critiquing we are about writers writing.

Many of us at Midtown Writers believed that writers spend too much time talking about writing without actually writing. As two collaborative bodies, we are prepared to break that stigma and engage the literary community by writing first and thinking about it later. No, we haven’t proclaimed that to be an original idea!

At present, we haven’t yet established a permanent location for the group. Our first meeting will be held at either the Black Dog in Lower-Town in Downtown St. Paul or at the Caribou Coffee right outside of the Target Field Station. A location will be announced once the first meeting is assembled.

All and any upcoming location for the group will be located somewhere along the Green Line with total ease of accessibility; hence the name of the group. We look forward to seeing you there!

Our motto: It can be true, maybe it's true, figure it out!
