What we're about

During the COVID-19 health crisis, the Greenville Meditators will meet via ZOOM. In normal times, we would meet weekly until the end of June, take the summer off, and resume after Labor Day in September. Considering that these are not normal times, Greenville Meditators will meet weekly on ZOOM from 7:00 until 8:00.

I will post through MeetUp the information you will need to join us, including a link to a discussion video for each week's topic.

Our format will be: discussion of the video, followed by our meditation (an invocation, 3 breath exercises, a chant, dedication, and a 20 minute meditation). If there's time at the end, we will continue the discussion.

This year we will be studying the talks of Pema Chödrön. Pema Chödrön is an American Tibetan Buddhist. She is an ordained Buddhist nun, former acharya (or teacher) of Shambhala Buddhism and disciple of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Chödrön has written several dozen books and audiobooks, and is principal teacher at Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia, Canada.

We will begin each evening by listening to a short clip from Pema Chödrön's CD "Getting Unstuck."

Before each meeting MeetUp will send out a reminder of our meeting. The information for Zoom – a link to download Zoom, the Meeting ID, and the Password -- will remain the same throughout our meditation year (the end of June 2021).

Please also note that, as is our custom, the last Tuesday of each month will be a Yoga Nidra meditation. Yoga Nidra is an hour long guided meditation.

The format of our meeting is as follows:
1. Opening words,
2. listening to a selection from Pema Chödrön's Getting Unstuck CD and discussion,
3. Opening Affirmation,
4. Breath Exercises: 3 breathing practices to bring calm and relaxation before meditation (kapalabhati [actively push air out and just relax allowing air to naturally come into the lungs], bellows breath [pumping the diaphragm for each inhale and exhale], and alternate nostril breath [inhale/exhale alternating right and left nostril]),
5. A chant to continue slowing and deepening the breath (Gaté, gate, para gaté, para som gate, bodi svaha – "Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone completely beyond. Oh, how beautiful.") repeated 7 times,
6. Your personal dedication,
7. Meditation (5 minutes to bell tones, 15 minutes in silence),
8. Closing words followed by chanting OM three times.
