Big Event: Composting and Irrigation at IRWD

GryFy, Master Gardeners of Orange County (MGOC), and the Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) are co-sponsoring an event on Friday, July 12th from 6-9pm. I will be giving two lectures. The first lecture will be on composting and the second on irrigation. There will be opportunity drawings after each lecture with prizes related to that lecture. GryFy, MGOC, and IRWD will also have tables (and probably representatives to answer specific questions you may have.)

The composting lecture will cover what makes good compost, how to make your own compost, and verimiculture (composting with worms). There should also be some MGOC Master Composters in attendance to answer specific questions.

The irrigation lecture will cover the impact of water misuse on our watershed, Using native or edible landscapes as a (partial) alternative to lawns, watering for optimal plant health, and how to program your automatic watering system.

It should be a fun evening. I hope you can attend.

I'm sorry I missed it. We were beat from the OC Fair, and I had to make cake for my son's birthday the next day. Going south again was impossible!

I'm frustrated because my rolling mini composter doesn't seem to create compost. The stuff just sits there!

Try these video links from Master Gardeners of Orange County:

The only off-the-shelf composters I like are the Jora Composters, but they are pricey.

I just want to say I really had a good time and express my appreciation to IRWD for hosting and promoting the event. I'd also like to thank my fellow Master Gardeners, Joan and Linda, for helping out and assisting in answering your questions.

Thank you for the presentation. You mentioned worms in OC. Would you please let me know where you got 1000 for $24 plus? I have some but would like to add more.

      The place is:
      McCrawls Redworms
      6029 Orange Ave.
      Cypress, Ca 90630

      His website is:
http://home.earthlink... And... He actually has Yelp reviews. They are all quite positive.

I'll be posting some other sources later this week.

This is a good list of vermicomposting resources. Scroll down to the SoCal section and look for nearby cities.

VermiPro (in list above) is located in HB. They have everything from worms to huge commercial vermicomposting systems. Pricey, but quality stuff and they really know their worms.
