Editing Our Evolution - After Hours Forum
Join scientists and fellow engaged citizens in a discussion on the many questions surrounding the possibility of editing the human genome. As gene editing techniques become more refined, the possibility of editing the human genome is moving from science fiction to reality. Many in the scientific community are calling for strict regulations on the use of this technology, while others are excited about the possibilities. Should we create babies who will never know disease? Should we stick to smaller changes, like lowering the rates of breast cancer by eliminating mutations? Or should we call for society to ban human gene-editing? How can we maximize benefits from these scientific advances while minimizing the harm that might come from them? Participants must be age 16 or older to attend this discussion. Light refreshments will be provided. RSVP at

    What we're about

Gulf Coast Science Café serves the scientific interests of our local community… and around Pensacola. The Café is a place where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology, over a cup of coffee, tea or a glass of beer, outside a traditional academic setting. The Café is a forum for debating science issues in an informal setting where relaxed conversation and an exchange of ideas is possible. The Café is committed to promoting public engagement with science and to making science accessible to all.

The Café Scientifique movement started in England in 1998 as an informal discussion forum giving everyone the opportunity to gather to discuss great topics in science. The Café meetings are designed to promote group discussion: the evening is led by an invited speaker, who talks briefly, then the topic is thrown open to debate and everyone is encouraged to join the discussion.
