Thirsting Lake Kayak Expedition

Come join us as we explore the farthest reaches of the Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve in search of Thirsting Lake! We will paddle through mangrove tunnels and explore the back country's winding and primitive trails! Who knows what creatures we may encounter on our paddling expedition! Our experienced and knowledgeable Guides are ACA Certified Kayak & SUP Instructors & Certified Florida Naturalists well versed on Florida's ecology and natural history & skilled at spotting local wildlife!

Skill Level: Novices are welcome but please note this is an extended kayak trip, & you should be comfortable paddling on the water :)

Novices: New to kayaking? We recommend you arrive 30 min prior to start of event to participate in a "mini on-shore kayak lesson" where we will go over basic kayak strokes which will ensure you get the most out of your paddling experience!

What to bring: Water shoes, long breathable clothing, bug spray, water and/or choice of beverage & snack to share :) **Headlamp or light for your kayak is important so you are visible on the water**

Launch Time: Everyone is expected to fill out a waiver & participate in a quick on shore safety briefing at which time we will help you get your kayak on the water and launch promptly at 4:00pm.

Duration: This is approximately a 3hr paddle but will incorporate some breaks in between. We will arrive back to our beach launch around 7:00pm to light refreshments and some cool tunes and enjoy the sunset! Feel free to bring your choice of beverage & snack to share :)

Cost: Normally $65, but for our Meetupers, we are offering it for $35 per person which includes a single kayak complete with seatback, life vest and paddle. We will also provide headlamps/or lights for the kayak to make sure you're visible on the water :)

***Free for those who bring their own kayak but donations are welcome :)***

Reservations Required: Yes! RSVP through Meetup and if you are bringing a guest please add them to your RSVP or contact us at[masked]-1125. Please let me know if you need a kayak or will be bringing your own :) We accept same day reservations (if spots are available).

Payment: We will collect payment on the day of the event. Cash is King!!!

Inclement Weather Policy: We go rain or shine but If there is threat of thunderstorms, lightning, high winds or other severe weather, we will contact you ONE HOUR prior to our scheduled departure time and reschedule our tour.

Since 1992 Gulf Coast Kayak has been considered the local favorite kayaking outfitter! We look forward to meeting you!!

The Emerald Mile of seagrass lining the trail to the Lake is a must see. There is something special about this place and I look forward to going there again soon. I will post our trip photos this week. Great seeing everyone!

The forecasted wind is just below our threshold and we will be challenged to reach our destination, so feathered blades at points. This may be a bit much for first time kayakers though. We can further assess as a group before launch. Both Bryan and I will be on the water and we can accommodate anyone who decides to return early. If you want to come by and just hang out and enjoy the view, you are welcome!

will the gusting wind ( 15 to 20) tomorrow be an issue with this paddle? I was going fishing today, in Charlotte harbor, and it was a no go... 3 to 4 ft whitecaps..

    May 7, 2014

    • Diana

Hi Darrin! It's $35 per person & we have plenty of singles :) we highly encourage everyone to go in a single unless someone has mobility issues or there's a child involved ;) we've seen too many instances where it becomes a power struggle Btwn 2 people ;) that being said, we have 4 tandems that we can rent out for the event ;) i can reserve one for you if you'd like.
